Panniers without pannier rack...

Hi All

Probably a really stupid question ...

The missus bought me some panniers for crimbo. I haven't fitted them as I've not been able to find a suitable rack (at a decent price).

Is it possible to fit panniers without using a rack? i.e strapping it somehow to the pillion seat and using the pillion handle at the back?

I assume we're talking about hard luggage, rather than soft? If they're hard panniers, you'll need a mounting frame suitable for the panniers and bike in question. I wouldn't trust any 'lash-up' arrangements at all.

Yup, hard luggage. It's a 'pizza box' jobby for sticking my lid in.

I take it that I could go down the route of strapping soft luggage to the bike then rather than using a rack?

Needs some kind of rack to bolt it on to. A CBR125 rack may fit your Skyjet, but it'll cost much more than the box, and a fair proportion of the bike, which you've doubtless discovered.

Just strap on. They expand out to a decent size, just be sure they're well clear of your exhaust.

Thanks Rogerborg - looks like the soft panniers are my best bet. I'm pretty gutted Argos have completely sold out of their £20 sets!
