Hi there , sorry to always be asking questions but I could do with some impartial advice .
I need to put a top box on my Yamaha YBR250.
At the moment it has no rack on it .
A few questions ;
1. Which is better - a luggage rack and then put a givi plate on it, or go for a givi rack for my bike (not been able to find one as yet).
2.Are givi and kappa equally as good as each other ?
3.I don't want a huge box that takes 2 helmets , but the last one I had was tiny and only just fitted my arai in it diagonally . Any ideas what size box I am after ?? I am thinking somewhere along the 39 litre range ??
4.Any ideas where I can buy a box cheaply ? I've looked on ebay and think I would like to get a brand new one .

Thanks for reading if you managed to get to the end !!!

Probably cheaper to get a standard type rack then fit a plate.

Companies are in partnership, quality is the same.

Just get the biggest you can afford, you will use it on other bikes you gat and they never seem big enough whatever size they are.

Ebay or https://www.motorbikesandparts.co.uk/

I emailed the seller with the yamaha rack and they said a 45L box would probably be too heavy for the rack and the bike.
Would you agree or do you think they are being over cautious ??
Sorry couldn't work out how to quote properly !![/quote]

They are generally quite cautious as if something goes wrong then they cant be blamed, depends what your gunna use it for. It your always carrying heavy objects along at 60-70ish.. it may strain it after a while. But if its more like drive to work, park up and helmet and clothes in box. Should be fine. You can get rickman topboxes which are classic square ones that are very light, i use one on my cb250n and it fits my helmet in and some gloves.. or i can fit trousers and a jacket, but not all together (they do do a bigger oblong shaped one) Usually can be had for around £30ish and it has fittings to put it onto a rack, doesnt use a plate.

For quoting go to the post you want to quote, and in the top right corner of the posters text box and it says quote. Click that and it'll appear in your reply box Very Happy HTH

Depend how much you put in it, you don't have to totally fill it with scrap metal Wink

Thanks , I just want to be able to nip to asda without the kids and fit a basketfull in there quite happily really .
And I don't think I really ride over 50mph ....... ever Embarassed
Would you say the 2 helmet boxes are too big size wise for the YBR250?? (It isn't much bigger than the 125)
Thanks for the other advice I will look into other types now too.

Hehe, you can quite easily fit a basket full in the rickman ones, i quite often do Laughing Very Happy although pizza boxes dont fit in it too well.. i usually put them in a backpack Very Happy

The 2 helmet boxes do sometimes look a tad huge on little bikes.. But who cares when its practical Wink i sometimes wish mine was bigger, as when you get somewhere, say for shopping and you dont wanna walk around in all your gear, its nice to have somewhere to plonk it and you fit more inside the 2 helmet ones. But.. usually i get by, just stick my helmet in a helmet bag, slung over my shoulder with jacket in the box and it isnt too bad Very Happy

Its only too big if you think it is, they were meant for all bikes Razz depends if you want it to be pleasing to the eye or not. Stick it in google and look for a few pictures see how it looks, theres gotta be one about somewhere

By the sounds of it you should be fine with the normal rack, although just to be safe i wouldnt recommend putting bricks or anything it in Laughing

Hmm, I'd sound a note of caution. The YBR 250 racks I've found with a quick google do look quite flimsy.

https://www.cmcbikes.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/302x302/5e06319eda06f020e43594a9c230972d/f/i/file_5_3.jpg

Is that the one you've been looking at? I honestly would hesitate to put a top box on that - it'd put a lot of strain on the mounting.

I'm not even sure that Yahama do an OEM rack and top box for the YBR 250, which is disappointing.

Sorry, I'd like to be more positive, but I don't want you to lose your top box the first time you hit the giddy heights of 50mph. Wink

Have you thought about panniers instead? You can get a fair amount into an expanding pair, although obviously they are more fiddly, less secure and not as waterproof. Sad

Thanks roger would you not even put a 1 helmet box on that rack ?
That is the rack i was going to buy.
Really need the top box , mostly for putting helmet in when I go anywhere as I can't carry much else whilst holding it Sad

I use a Renntec luggage rack with a Givi plate and a 45L top box on the Bandit.
https://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/m/m_EIxge4ND7Dw_ILYOh08UA/140.jpg
Been using it during a regular commute and for weekend blasts for the past year with no major problems... although I make sure I regularly check that the fixing bolts are secure, and I have no need to carry anything very heavy in it.

Thanks , that looks more secure than the yamaha one but apparently they don't make it for the YBR250 yet Sad
Anyone know if the 125 version would fit ?? Long shot Very Happy

I'd have to see it in the flesh, plus what it's bolting to to on the bike. My concern would be the mounts, and the torsional force on them. It might be just fine, but you'd be paying quite a lot to find out.

If you do go for that rack, you may be able to get it welded directly on to the frame, as well as bolting it on. Likely not though, I think there would be bodywork in the way.

Looks ok to me. The last thing you'd want to do with a flimsy rack is weld it on anyway - what sort of advice is that?

I've used the same system and it works well. Thumbs Up

Maximum load limit 5kg.

Who was it that posted the topbox warning of no weights over 3kg?

I still think this is to cover their bums. Helmets weight about 1.5kg

And i doubt your shopping is regularly going to outweight 5kg ) unless buying bulk milk Laughing )

To be honest, my whole racking system looks alot flimsier then the ybr250 one, it wasnt even made for my bike.. i just made it fit :o although the ybr one does look like a glorified hand grip.

Not sure how heavy the usual round shaped topboxes weigh, but cant see a lighter one being much of a problem

Could always go with soft luggage? Or a tank bag Very Happy

Nothing wrong with my comprehension. Those mounts are stronger than you might think. If they were flat then there might be an argument to worry about work-hardening from flexing and cracking, but not with a fold down the middle.

Even if they were - welding them on would not be the answer.

Why not? I do pretty much all my shopping on the ER5.
A 5k bag of spuds, bread, milk, few tins, pastas, sauces, bottles of water/juice, fresh meat, etc are all regular purchases. A top box is the motorbikers equivalent to Mary Poppins' handbag.
