I'm looking to buy an Arai helmet but what numbers do you look for to get age of the helmet.

Cheers

Umm generally 4 numbers, the first 2 will probably be 19 or 20. Not all helmets have their age in them.

Hi truslack

Just looked again and the numbers read.. 57-58 which is size, and the other numbers are.. ECE 22 - 05
Any clues? 05 perhaps the year.

EC 22-05 is a standard of safety.

The age of the lid may be inside the lid, I don't think it'd be on a sticker on the outside

Not all helmets have their manufacturing date marked on them. The ones I remember had them on a tag attached to the strap. If you take the entire liner out there may be a sticker inside the helmet but I don't think any shop would appreciate you doing that to their stock.

The helmets age usually starts when it comes out of the box and is first used. then the amount of use there after dictates its age.

Um, personally I wouldn't buy any helmet that had been out of the box, whether it had been used or sat on a shelf as a demo model.

Whatever discount you're getting on it, a new helmet at the same price will give better protection than a dropped Arai.

Why does a helmet that has come out of the box mean it's been dropped?

If you roll the cover over the chin strap back (Not the end with the DD rings) you will see an orange tab, lift that up and you will see a little white tab that is often folded over, that has the date of production on it.

If your buying from a 5 Star Dealer then the date you buy is the start of their 5 year warranty, but the liners will be degrading from the day they leave the press, but they should be good for 10-15 years of no use.

Here is a pic of mine so you know what to look for ....

Why would you assume that it hadn't? Oh, the seller said so. They probably even called you "mate". Well, then that's all right then - if you can't trust someone who wants you to give them money, they who can you trust? Rolling Eyes

Just hope they didn't drop it before putting in the box, or leave the boxes loose in the back of the van Laughing

Because who goes into a shop and starts throwing helmets on the floor?

When I go to buy my helmet I go to a dealer I trust, a dealer who cares about the products he sells, a dealer who will not let any tom dick and harry start throwing helmets around the room. If you buy your lids from a bloke down the pub then that's your problem but when I go to buy my helmets its from someone trustworthy.

Would you honestly expect a dealer to put stock out on display knowing that it won't be sold, why would they do that? That's not good business is it? Or would you prefer not to see a lid at all before you buy it?

How do you know they haven't been dropped in the factory? how do you know they haven't been banged around on a pallet at the docks? how do you know they haven't been dropped by the courier?

The dealer who knows the value and delicacy of a helmet is the last person to drop one in my opinion.
