I have a Kawasaki 1986 400 Eliminator. 4 cylinder. I had it restricted with washers in the carbs and this caused it a lot of problems (cutting out at tick over, losing cylinders and running on 3 and occasionally 2) The garage i took it to tried all sorts to get the washers to work with the bike but nothing.

I was wondering would a throttle restrictor do the same to the engine. The guy said it needs to rev high and with the washers it struggles to do that.

I refuse to ride it illegally. So i need it restricted and getting another bike isnt going to be easy or cheap.

Please help or suggest.

You can restrict via the throttle.

Won't be good to ride at all though. It will be a fail with no throttle. Only option on old bike really is washers or throttle stop.

Rake it to a garage with a dyno and just tell them you want it restricting. They'll know what to do and they'll be able to get it on the dyno and look at the air / fuel ratio along with the power output. Thats whats really needed to do it properly, anything else is just guess work really.

But what position would the stop have to be in to restrict the bike to 33bhp? If it were in the 33bhp position, how would you be able to prove this?
That's why you need a place with a dyno.

Riding with a throttle stop for me was a better ride than riding with the washers in.

Throttle stop doesn't mess up fuelling etc. Washers do. Also you have access to above about 6k revs with the throttle stop, with the washers you don't.

Wshers really spolit the ride, throttle stop I can live with, full power I can' t wait for Very Happy. Only another like 19 months or something :/

Well with the washers in it wouldnt rev over 8000-8500 and maximum power is at 12500 so just get it to stop at around 8000-8500, (12500rpm / 50bhp) x 33 = 8500 roughly. With both of those taken into account that should do it.

@0l0dom0l0 i got 21 months roughly. Though due to problems and waiting for tax and havent riden much. Got enough time on it to know how it goes though. I will have it back in a couple of days, its been at the garage for over 2 weeks now. I know i'm not taking it there again but at least i know a good job is being done, just not quickly.

Hi

The washers are after the fuel metering of the carbs, just like the throttle. The washers shouldn't really screw up the fueling any differently to just not opening the throttle much (or using a throttle stop).

However stick them in upside down, don't seat the carbs right or have worn carbs and they will probably screw up.

All the best

Keith

In theory they shouldn't. Do you remember my thread about them screwing up my Fazers fuelling above 6k though?

I think we all came to the conclusion they were creating a back pressure or something tat was playing havoc with the diaphragms.

theoretically they shouldn't but the garage took them out got the engine running perfectly then when putting them back in it cut out at high revs, ran to rich in low revs or just reverted back to the misfiring. But they have now put an adjustable throttle stop in there now. Just got to get new tires and then i'll be back on it.

I do miss it, i havent had it for 2 1/2 weeks now Sad
