Choice is the key. Take the bike when you feel like taking the bike, not cos you *have* to.

I generally take the car when the purpose of the journey is the things you do when you get there.

I generally take the bike when the purpose of the journey is the journey itself.

If that makes me a fair weather rider, I don't care. Mr. Green

25's middle aged? Rock on - seems I had a midlife crisis then. Thumbs Up

Being a learner I always find its best just to concentrate on the journey, and avoid considering the destination. So often thinking about where your going adds an emotional component to the journey which is distracting.

Stereo typing is easy to do,

I'm a long haired student - gets drunk every night, has no job and spends their day watching daytime tv.. wrong. But that what most people assume when you say what you do, because for a fair few cases its true.
You go out to see lots of filthy hippys getting wasted and staggering home with traffic cones on their heads and you get this impression.

Its has to be said and i'm sorry but when its summer time and a hot day i loose count of the bikes screaming past for ridiculous overtakes on blind bends was over the speed limit, and thats any bike, but harleys and sports bikes i'm affraid top the offender list.
as much as it pains me and as much as i know for many cases its untrue.. well you get what i mean.

This impression is also had by the general public, many apart from those who have been on my bike think i'm some sort of lunatic who attempts stupid and dangerous things every day on my bike..

If you take you bike out one day a year and have fun great, i'd love to be in that kind of position to ride only when i felt like it even if it was on 2 days a year... but people who spend that day/s ridding like a twat and annoying the rest of the people on the road then it makes me so mad Evil or Very Mad

If I had it my way I'd be a fair weather rider. Nothing as crap as getting up in the rain and taking half the day to get your bike gear on for work, then get a soaking, then repeat the whole process again. The only reason I don't have a car at the minute is because I can't afford it, but when I am 18 the plan is just to have a bike for the nice days.

this argument gets tedious doesnt it, how many of these threads we had since the sun came out? Razz

i dont have any problem with fair weather, sunday riders, ride for fun whatever, if you can have a car and a bike...then respect, id love that, at the moment i cant be arsed to do the car licence, and dont have the money for everything id want

if a fair weather rider cuts me up, then id probly hate him for it, same as i hate the couriers who ride all year round, think they are gods left testicle, and disregard any other bike on the road as not worthy, its all relative

if you are on two wheels, you get a nod from me Thumbs Up , unless i havent seen you, cos im tired/pissed off and want to get home, to fall off the bike and recover from intense cramp and/or sweaty summer leathers

do what you want people, freedom of choice, anyone remember that?

just dont run me over in your car whilst on your mobile finding out whats for dinner, cheers Razz

I used to think it was more a case of, Bikers (regardless of skill levels, leathers colour, bike condition....) all stick together. It is cars that p1ss us off?

One of the reasons I got the bike was because of the bike community and how everyone on a bike is suddenly your mate just because you have a bike.

Now, after this post, it looks like I am sadly mistaken as some people will look down on me because I have nice leathers and a shiny bike, how sad is that....!

There was a hoofing great bloke with tatoos all over his arms that were the size of my thighs. He was on a chopper/custom machine who had broken down. So there I am, gleaming R1, nice new leathers and a very very highly polished helmet, Wink I stopped to help him out. He could not get it out of top gear as his gear lever had broken off.

I got out my little R1 tool kit and tried in vein to shift the gear, unfortunately the plyers were not up to the job. So I loaned him my mobile and he called a mate of his to come and help. I then made tracks and head off. He was most appreciative.

Now without my bike if I was in a pub, I would under no circumstances have walked up to this gorilla of a man and said, "Alright mate, hows it going?" as I would have probably died a very painful, horrible death!!

So lets drop the who rides fastest, whos the best, you are a fag comments and just be pleased that we all have bikes and are all part of a huge, nation wide community! Cool

I do reckon that most people who generalise about fair weather bikers, born again bikers, Sunday riders and power rangers would still stop to help one if they saw one in need of help. I know I would, and would expect that most others on here would do as well, as I'd be very pissed off in a Sunday rider didn't bother to stop and ask if I needed any help (yes I do know you can't always stop to ask whats wrong but most of the time you can do) so would happily stop for anything on two wheels (well, unless it has a little blue light on it and I've been doing some riding at pace Razz ) and they're more likely to stop and help you next time you're broken down if you stop and help them when they're broke down. If no one ever stopped to help me when I was stopped with a broke bike I'd never bother stopping for anyone.

Yeah there are things to generalise about and we all do it (well, most of us at least) but at the end of the day we're all in the same boat and have at least one thing in common, so it does pay to be at least slightly friendly. Thumbs Up

Where did you get that impression?
Only post that was a bit negative was zero's, and that was slagging off people riding likes twats rather than the categories suggested in the initial thread.

i get well pissed off with some sunday riders who feel the need to ride around like idiots and give the rest of the bikers a bad name

esp near me where there are no cops or speed cameras they all race about with their silly race cans on making as much noise as possible

how do i tell the weekend warriors from the bikers?

simple the bikers give you a nod, the weekend warriors are too far up their own or each others arses

fair weather is differant as bikes and bad weather dont mix, allthough i dont drive a car as i cant afford too and even if i could it would be slow and 5 X the insurance cost wheras i can get a bike that will go from 0-60 in 5 seconds and pull to 130mph for less than £1500 for the bike and £300 for insurance!

so bikes are for me, and i use them all year round (except snow/ice)

How do you know that they are weekend warriors? When I was riding I quite often felt the need to ride around as what could be described as an idiot, and I had a TL1000R with race cans so also made a bit of noise. How did you know they were weekend warriors?

The people who normally don't nod back are scooters, commuters, cruiser riders and I'm not going to risk finding out if police nod back as last time I nodded at a cop he pulled me over. Laughing Commuters probably see lots of bikes each day so don't bother I wouldn't if I rode in London as too many times to nod really. Scooters I will nod but only if they nod first as most aren't really bikers just some 16 year old waiting to get their Nova but am quite happy to nod if they nod first. Cruiser riders again I'll nod if they nod first but quite a lot of them don't so I can't be bothered if they don't nod first.

When I was pushing a broken R6 around a motorway roundabout there was a few bikes who just rode past and didn't look like weekend warriors, but someone on a Ducati stopped for me don't know if he was or wasn't a weekend warrior but if I had a Ducati I wouldn't be using it all week and all weather, but he stopped and waited around until some other people came with a trailer to pick me and the broke bike up, so it's a bit of a sweeping generalization to say that they're all stuck up their own arses.

Pah, a bit of snow and ice and you don't ride? Razz I travelled all the way from Manchester (riding back to near Reading) back in January this year when we had lots of snow and ice to collect my new TL1000R. Roads were very empty and didn't see any other bikes around but didn't have any problems other than getting a bit cold. Pah you fair weather riders. Razz Razz Razz (just a joke, but I did ride down in the snow and ice Neutral )

I also use my bike all year round (well, did until Mr DVLA took my license) but if I had a car I'd take that in preference in the crap weather as you keep warmer and drier in a car than on a bike, and warmer and drier = better.

I personally think these names come out of envy.

I ride all year around, what ever the weather (apart from snow Wink) and I ride quite a crap mediocre bike.

I envy the persons that have a GSXR1000 that gets used one day a week etc, and how he can afford to do that! Bloody sunday riders Razz.

And thats my opinion why we call them those name, replace the Sunday with BAB or Fair Weather etc.

I don't know whether this apply's to anyone else but it does apply to me!

people riding like idiots on bikes really pisses me off, there is no need for it!

i was doing my mock test and this dick on an R1 felt the need to blast past us all at like 120+ at close proximity, i spotted him in the mirrors so was prepared!

but i ask, is there any need?

none at all!

then some fool on a fazer was purposly following us, and overtook on a blind corner after we all pulled over for him on a long straight

there is no need to ride like an idiot, just to try and impress

There is a difference between riding and doing things in an effort to try to impress people, to riding and doing things because you want to do them. When I speed, wheelie (well, try to Laughing ), stoppie and other stuff which could be said to be riding like an idiot I do it because I want to and because I enjoy it. If someone is watching then makes no difference to me (well unless they happen to be a traffic police officer Laughing ) and I'd do it if there are people watching or if there is no one else around.

I reckon you should only be doing stuff because you enjoy it and want to do it, not because you want to impress others.

I think we all show off when we see someone we know, especially if they are on a bike.

Where did you get that impression?

Sorry, perhaps I should have explained better.

The reason I say since the post is, I have always known the term fair weather rider and always accepted being one as I ride in fair weather. However, since this post, whilst none of it has been very negative, I get the feeling that being a fair weather rider is more of a label than I thought.... It just opened my eyes to that fact that there is a little more too it other than just riding in fair weather. Hope I am making sense.

I think a lot of it is that as well.....

This is what I am talking about, one idiot passes you at speed with a noisy can, then he must be a fair weather rider. I have a bike with a loud can and I ride it in fair weather, but that does not make me an idiot! In fact I am very cautious on my bike, I don't want to die.... Confused

There are plenty of mentalists out there on bikes who ride all year round and lose sight of their vulnerabilities on these crazy machines.

I must be a born again fairweather rider! There was a gap in my riding and I didn't take my test until 2000. From 1997 (GS125) until February this year (Speed Triple) my bikes were my only mode of transport all year round. I have now decided not to ride through another winter and bought a car. I like to smile when I am riding and that isn't possible when being sandblasted by fecking hailstones at 70mph (honestly, officer). As someone mentioned in an earlier post, you do appreciate your bike more when you ride it when you don't need to.

Oh! And I must have been a Power Ranger too in 2002/3 when I had matching leathers to go with my black Sprint ST.

Where could I have got leathers to match this:

I get annoyed if i go down to Whitby/Scarboro on a weekend for a blast and see all the nice shiny sportsbikes with riders all kitted up as if theyve just come from the racetrack frowning at me cos im riding a humble GS500.

Surely regardless of bike, you should be accepted as a rider? It seems that non-sportsbike riders/cruisers seem to ignore this area as i never see a dirty battered bike at all
