 Posted: 22:43 - 17 Feb 2011 Post subject: Good or Bad - 148miles on a 50cc - Notts to London! |
 |
|
So, being that my VFR is still off the road and I've yet to get my Mod2 sorted due to lack of cash, I'm still on my CBT using my 50cc moped..
It's not the worst moped in the world, 50cc air cooled 2-stroke, can hit an indicated 40-45 (45 downhill with the wind behind me whilst farting and stripping my clothes) 2003 reg with 6kmiles on the clock. It's been serviced every 2k miles since I've owned it (got it with 327km on the clock from a family friend, he rode it and then got ill so couldn't use it anymore, I needed transport to get to work - £300 can't go wrong!). Never let me down and often surprises me with how quickly(lol) it can go round corners overtaking the odd car (also planning overtakes is fun!)
Basically -
I wanted to know peoples opinions on it, wether I'd be commiting social suicide or would be "an experience I'd only want to do the once in my life, but could be fun!".. I'd be stuck to A+B roads (route linked at the bottom) and would be looking around 4hours minimum with a few stops for fuel/food during the route (probably looking around a 30minutes stop minimum half way)
The reason behind it is that my sister lives in Kingston-Upon-Thames, havent seen her or my brother-in-law since way before Christmas and fancied getting away from my house with the folks for a few days.
I'd normally go with my brother, using his car but being I'd rather do it on my own figured this was the only way, but wanted to know if it would be a good or bad idea for either myself or my moped?..
The length of the route and the time I'd be riding doesn't bother me in the slightest, but had it in the back of my mind it might not be good for a 50cc?
This is the route:
https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Denton+Green&daddr=London+Rd%2FA308&geocode=FdBjKAMd8G3t_w%3BFQh7EAMdqpH7_w&hl=en&mra=dme&mrsp=1&sz=15&dirflg=ht&sll=51.415401,-0.281267&sspn=0.014935,0.038066&ie=UTF8&ll=51.41045,-0.290194&spn=0.014936,0.038066&t=h&z=15
Thanks for any input/opinions.. for good ones! ____________________ Bike: Currently Bikeless... Gahh |

My head says 'You a crazy fool, don't do it'
Seriously though I rode my 50 cc ped for around 5 miles the other day and after approximtely 0.5 miles I wanted to die from the shame and for the ped to burn in hell.

Hey Chimp,
It's totally doable, that's for sure. I know people who've gone a lot further on similar mopeds.
However, you have to be fully committed here, as cb1rocket said, you are looking at a 4-6 hour journey depending on stops and traffic just THERE! Then there's the note of 1000 wasps in your endcan for that amount of time which will make you want to end it all before you arrive in a very grotesque fashion.
I'm fairly sure in London you can rent CG125s for like £25-50/day with full insurance included, you'd be better off doing that or taking some form of public transport, probably the train.
Also, think about fuel consumption! I'd guarantee you'll use over a litre of two stroke oil there and back, depending on fuel economy and the price of fuel.
If you really want to, go for it, just make sure you know what you're getting into first. Maybe go somewhere that's a 2 hour round trip and see how that feels, if it's so bad you end up wishing you brought a gun so you can go postal then it's probably not a good idea. !

I use my ped for everything, covering around 20-25miles a day to get to work, I can cover 8miles in around 20minutes which I find pretty fun, averaging 30-35mph in peak rush-hour in Nottingham..
The sound is a bit annoying, but music makes anything entertaining!

Of course - pictures and all! (perhaps a video if I could find a muvi or go pro cheap!? - help on this would be good!) I just mentioned it to my old man and he pretty much told me to gtfo as it's a bad idea lol..
I'm not fussed about the time scale, the seat is comfy enough and I can always have a break if I need to stretch. I'd be leaving nottingham around 8-9am at the latest so I'd have literally the whole day of daylight and comfort, also missing out of London rush hour by the time I get to my sisters (as long as it does take more than 8hours!)
Can anyone see any problem I'd cause to my moped? (doesn't have a temp gauge so wouldn't be able to tell if it's overheating til the last minute etc).. ____________________ Bike: Currently Bikeless... Gahh |

I live in Nottingham heading to London so sadly the CG rental isn't doable (I don't know of anywhere in Nottingham that has a similar scheme?).
If I could swap or even sell my moped and get a cheap 100/125 for around £300-400, I'd be more than happy to do it just to make it easier, and to get more experience with gears than I already have (constantly forget the left hand isn't a clutch on the moped and bike isn't a brake so often f**k myself up).
I'd be taking a bottle of 2-stroke with me, not to mention filling it up before I left my house to make sure I would be ok for the journey down there, could always get more if I need to. Fuel wise, I expect to need to fuel up at minimum 2-3 times for the journey, £6 to fill up from fuel light coming on (6-7litres or so) and get around 60-70miles to a tank most weeks (I'm not the smallest of guys!).
I'm pretty confident that nothing should go wrong, cant see any reason for it anyway.. ____________________ Bike: Currently Bikeless... Gahh |

Absolutely do it. Should be fun. Riding distance on a tiddler is always an adventure, just expect a bit of hair pulling frustration from time to time.
You'd be surprised how quickly you can get from one place to another, even on something that seems slow. Average speed on most journeys even on a big bike is something like 41mph, I read somewhere. Being that you can filter through the heaviest of traffic on a ped, you should be able to make that journey is about 3 hours (each way). Being optimistic maybe ____________________ The RXS100: vehicle of choice for Chuck Norris |

Do it!
I know lots of bikers that ride for 6-8 hours at a time, the distance is immaterial. Just check the weather beforehand, nothing more depressing than 6 hours in rain. Warm and waterproof gear and a spare plug and your sorted. ____________________ https://www.metacafe.com/watch/1972097/how_to_behave_on_a_forum/ |

Mate, Do it and take lots of pics on the way!! I think that would make you a legend if you could make it all that way on a ped! I went from Bordon to Brighton a few times when I was 16 on my little TS50 but I was a kid and was just happy to be off a push bike.

What the hell! If you`ve got the time and the guts to do it, do it .... it`s things like that , that give you something to talk about later in life when you are a potty old man .
When you`ve done a trip like that , you realise how easy it is on bigger bikes.
See it as a challenge,
Go for it and come back and tell us how it went.
I just hope it does`nt rain while you`re doing it. ____________________ I am the sum total of my own existence, what went before makes me who I am now! |
