My bike had a service today at Thunderroad in Bridgend. As I was heading home seen an old guy in full bike gear and his bike parked up down the road. Stopped, asked him if he was ok he said no bike is bollocked (battery dead).

Took him back to his bike and phoned the AA. I had to hide my bike before the AA came. The AA got the bike started, I had to jump in the AA van and we headed off to JTS bikes (2 miles away) following the old guy. He was supposed to be part exchanging this bike hehe. AA guy pissed off but I had to get back to my bike. A kind fellow looking at the bikes in JTS gave me a lift back.

This old guy had a Sachs 125, never seen one before. Anyway, the moral of the story get breakdown cover. Very Happy

Excuse me if I'm being a bit thick here, but why did you have to hide your bike?

He had to hide his bike because I'm guessing he told the AA man he was pillion on the 125.

Some breakdown policies, such as mine, cover you if you are a passenger in/on any vehicle.

It's a Guzzi, they probably just thought you were taking it our for its weekly push. Dance!

From one anecdote, yes. When I broke down(*) on my CM125 clone I watched the world and its dog ride by as I dug around in the carb.

I've stopped at a couple of abandoned bikes to see if I could find the owner and help out, but I've still to get my angel wings. Angelic

I always Offer to help bikers.

Apart from once when I was in Brighton and just done fishing.

My cousin was a driver and we were putting our rods away and I saw a guy push his bike. I asked if he was OK and he said yeah, just no petrol.

So I instinctively left him, but all the way back to London I was thinking damn I feel bad.

Since that day, I will always stop for a biker. I recall 3 or 4 mile push of my tiny RS125 in bike gear and a helmet. Sad

It's good to help each other, and as long as we do it, then it will help keep that tradition of bilers helping bikers.

Once upon a time, if you found out someone else was a biker, it would be pretty cool, but these days, anyone seems to pass! Sad

Not sure if this is true, but if you leave your helmet next to a wheel, is that a 'I am broken down' signal?

I'd not heard that one. Are you sure you're not thinking of a tie on the doornob? Wink

Think it's a bit of an oldschool type thing. You supposedly put your helmet down by your rear wheel as a signal for being broke down. Not sure how many people would know about or use it now though.

I thought I had heard of it, so I take it no one actually does it then? Sad

It would be cool if CBT's taught it.

It's worth doing just incase somebody does know about it. But regardless of wether or not they have their helmet next to their wheel or not I still tend to stop anyway.

Good idea about teaching it on the CBT though. Thumbs Up

After breaking down with the nc30 I will stop for any other biker I see just to see if I can help, was only a mile or two of a walk but on a hot day in bike gear and a lid was bloody tiring.

And agree on the bikers not stopping for you any more, about 3 or so went past on that walk with the bike and carried on going, then some old man pulled over to see if he could help in any way, thanked him but said it wasn't too far.

It is true, but not many modern bikers will know that.

Plus most people have breakdown cover through there insurance and / or a mobile phone so they can get help.

I still either pull over or give the thumb up thumb down signal. I have had a few bikers pull over and ask if everything was ok and been given the thumb up / thumb down signal, while having a smoke break at the side of the road.

Karma to the OP.

I've stopped to help bikers and have been helped myself. On a ride through Brecon I decided to stop - near Pen-y-fan - for a coffee and a quick fag. As I tried starting the bike it became quickly apparent that the reg/rec decided to committ suicide. A kind chap on a bike (can't think what it was now) stayed with me until somebody came along with jump leads to get the poxy thing going again. The AA are the most useless bunch of twats and couldn't find my location even after offering the lattitude and longitude co-ordinates. Anyway I'll stop procrastinating now...
