 |
|
well hey there brainy bike people
iv just turned 17 and have upgraded from a derbi gpr 50 up to a sexy 2008 YAMAHA YZF R125
i love this bike, however, the exhaust is hideous and iv also heard that is what is restricting it the bike to 75mph (ish)
i would be really grateful if you could answer these questions for me:
where is it restricted?
how do i de-restrict it?
best exhaust option for performance? (scorpion or leo vince)
any other no/low cost performance mods i can make?
thankyou

There's a pipe running from a T off the exhaust downpipe that runs to the air box. Some owners have reported a slight performance increase by blocking it off. Not tried it myself though so can't vouch for it.
Other owners have reported better torque etc with aftermarket exhausts, some say they resulted in a slightly lower top speed. Not much you can do really, just enjoy it for what it is, a cheap to run expensive to buy nice looking learner bike!
Owner forums can be found here: https://www.yamahar125.com/forum/ and here: https://r125.proboards.com/ and are a decent source of info, but populated by a fair few chavs with the odd decent chap! |

33 BHP will feel like a scud missile compared to your 14.7!! I've had the sportbike and now ride a 250 V-Twin everyday for commuting. It's fast enough through town and will top a ton plus you get excellent fuel consumption (getting old!)
If you pass your A2 then you'll be restricted for 2 years but after that you'll be able to have whatever you want
The money that the exhaust costs will probably pay for your test. ____________________ Current ride - Yamaha MT-07 |

I know someone who has put 30k miles on one of them. Fitting a scorpion exhaust lost a few mph in the top-end but it could probably be won back with a powercommander if you care to spend a couple of hundred quid to find out.
Taking off the clean air tube from the pipe to the airbox didn't do much and was only done because the original pipe failed, which DID make the bike run like a dog.
The engines are nicely made but the piston and barrel plating is suspect. This engine suffered a failed piston skirt at about 18k miles which lunched the whole top-end. The pistons look like they were made by airfix. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

They make a hell of a lot more sense than fucking about trying to tune up a four-stroke 125 so it goes an extra three miles an hour, at the expense of breaking down the whole while, riding ILLEGALLY on a bike you have fraudulence obtained insurance for, failing to declare modifications, nulifying its validity....
If you cant be arsed to spend a LITTLE time and effort and money to take your fucking test, so you can LEGALLY ride a bike thats any faster than what you have, then, pretty poor show, I reckon.....
Why should we help you pretend to be a smart arse, you obviously ent smart enough!
Go buy an R6 or something and ride that, without a licence, you may as well be hung for a sheep as a lamb, but dont come crying to us when they catch you out!
You have bought the wrong bike. 4 strokes don't 'de-restrict' becouse they aren't restricted, and you don't even know that!
What you want to do is 'tune' it which is very different, and on a fourstroke, not easy, or cheap....
AND you dont have a licence to ride a tuned or de-restricted bike ANYWAY.
If you want to go faster than a 14bhp R125 and the law will allow, either buck up and do what the 'nobs' at DVLA want...
I mean its hardly like they want you to write a fucking thesis on quantum mechanics or astro-navigation..... just ride a motorbike without crashing it a couple of times and show some knowledge (you obviousley currently lack) on basic road law!
And you can have 33bhp, more than twioce what your R125 makes, or is ever LIKELY to make, and enough to propell you up to 100mph genuinely and legally and reliably......
Of fuck the system all together, and just get a big bike and dont bother with the test, and hope not to get cought.... becouse there is very little difference between that and what you are proposing now, except, when they do you for riding a 600 without insurance or licence, they cant also add obtaining insurance by deception to the charge sheet......
So why not? Do you think its too big a risk? Or do you think you'll kill yourself of a 600?
THOSE are the questions you should be asking yourself, not what exhaust you ought to get.....
Bottom line is, an R125 is what it is. If you want a faster bike, get one, no point fannying about with a tiddler trtying to make it something its not.
Bottom line is how do you get a faster bike? Legally or illegaly, your call.... but if a big bikes too scary, then more the fucking reason you need training and test, NOT go faster goodies on a toy-bike!
If you want to do it legit, options are pretty simple, and all the info is here:-
https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Diol1/DoItOnline/Doitonlinemotoring/DG_10031642
I presume you have a CBT cert for a geared bike., from your moped.
You take that, book the theory test, online £31
Pass that, book your Mod 1 £15.50. Pass that take theory & Mod 1 test passes plus other docs, book Mod 2 £75, take that, pass, and you get a licence.
Take it on the R125, making youre you have ticked the right boxes on the forms for an A2 catagory licence, you get an A2 catagory licence, which is a full bike licence, with 2 year 33bhp restriction on it.... job done, two years after passing, you can ride any bike you like, no more tests, till then, something with 33bhp, like an 250 fourstroke or full-power RS, or a 500 twin with restrictor kit
You cant do DAS your not old enough. accelerated access isn't an issue & wont be an issue if you get your arse into gear, A1 lightweight licence isn't an issue if you use the r125 for tests, you just need to make sure you tick the right boxes, pay the money and pass the tests. ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!

Perhaps, but calling the DVLA 'Nobs' because he cant be bothered to follow the advice on their web-site properly, and would prefer to try and cheat the system, rather than put in a little effort?
I say it how I see it... yes he was only asking, and I was simply telling him how it is....
His call, put in some effort, do it right, do it legal, get the reward.
Put in no effort, do it illegal, hope not to get cought...
Or be a 'nob' and spend silly amounts of money to try and cheat, make a nice bike less valuable and more unreliable, for little or no reward and even more risk.... ____________________ My Webby'Tef's-tQ, loads of stuff about my bikes, my Land-Rovers, and the stuff I do with them!
