IMO a good idea, okay so apparently its harder to judge the speed of the car with lights on, atleast when you give a quick glance your more likely to see it in the first place.

I always switch at least my sidelights on in the car whatever the weather. Habit from when bikes were fitted with off/on switches for the headlight i suppose.

I fucking hate thes prats that drive around with their front fogs/spots on all the time though.

Always have full driving lights (note: not full beam!) on the car, did on the SV too. Ninja I'm unable to turn them off.

I'm seriously considering fitting the brightest LED DRLS I can find to my bike, to help pick me out of the background again. I fear a 55W halogen bulb will pale into the scenery.

Or you could just spend the absolute minimum time in any position in the road where some inattentive idiot could fail to notice you and drive right into your path.

In a way it is good to know if a vehicle is in fact in use as it were.

But in another way- it's an absolutely stupid idea. Were not Canada Laughing

Has its positives because a quick glance and with lights on a car should be seen easy enough. Negatives are as quoted.

Bikers tend to stand out more because they do everything they can to be visible by leaving their lights on at all times when riding. Cagers will become complacent regardless. If they cant see us now with our lights on I can imagine it will only be worse when everyone has lights on.

I usually have at least dipped beam on the rare occasions that I drive the car.
The Bandit has permanent DRL that can't be switched off

Yes, car driving will get safer.

Yes, bike riding will get more dangerous.

Plus ça change.

Note this is JUST 'side lights'. Which don't tend to blind like dipped beam on permantently as many cars and bikes already have.
Because it says it HAS to be done without headlights, it sounds like it's making it better for bikes, as presumably we will actually see less with dipped beam wired on with the ignition switch.

Side lights should make it easier to judge a car's speed, because they aren't blinding, as head lights can be.

OOO So that's why all the new BMW's I see, drive around on their Angel Eyes all the time!

I thought it was a bit weird. Good idea though. Especially with the amount of IDIOTS (I say that with a passion) that think its okay to drive at 5.30pm without any lights at all.

Thats a fair point. It's quite frightening the amount of people who are driving at twilight without any lights on.

I see so many cars that don't have any lights on at all that it scares me. They can't see where they are going and we can't see them. So I think it is a good idea to have the sidelights on. Thumbs Up

Just to save anyone reading through that link, this is the bit we're interested in:

Quote:
European Union

As a result of European Union Directive 2008/89/EC coming into force on the 7 of February 2011 all new passenger cars and small delivery vans through out the EU will have to come equipped with Daytime Running Lights.[12] This will also be the case for Trucks and busses in August 2012.

Personally I think it's a bad idea. If a car driver doesn't notice another car on the road then some lights on the front won't make a difference. Then of course people get used to seeing lights on cars all the time and it becomes the norm, then bikes with lights on become less 'unique' and less conspicuous.

I do agree with above posters that dipped beam isn't good all the time as it can still glare, and going over bumps you can appear to be flashing people out of junctions. IMO if manufacturers like Volvo start using LED DRLs instead then that's better than always on dipped beam, but worse than no lights.

Mandatory DLR lights on cars will stop them pulling out on bikes?
