Arai Chaser or Shoei XR11

Does anyone have/had an Arai Chaser or the Shoei ?

I tried one on along with a Shoei XR1100 and they both fit well so it's up to me really. I can get both at the same price as well, the one thing I like on the Arai is the Haga colours ( I'm a fan ) but everyone says the Shoei is the better helmet with modern tech

Not sure really, my current helmet is a Marushin. Anyone had either or even Arai/Shoei in general what do you think?

If the shoei fits you perfectly, then go for it. The original X-spirit was more than a match for the RX7-Corsair.. so it's in a totally different league to the Chaser!

In terms of being modern, the X-spirit design is at least 9 years old! It first came out in 2002, but it still retains the shoei classic lines.

To be fair, I can't get along with shoeis. I've had the XR1100 and XR1000 and wished I had saved up for the arais instead... Having said that, I DID end up with the arais 7-9 months after purchasing the shoeis! Did it in 2006 and again in 2010!

People, mostly the salesman, have said that in terms of ventilation technology, the XR1100 is on par with the X-11/X-spirit and they've tested it on track and on the road. They even tried to get an X-spirit and X-Spirit II to fit on my head, but it's more of a long oval shape so would never have a chance in hell of fitting me! I fit the Arai corsair/RX-GP and Chaser to a T!

Why not hunt around for Corsairs. They have been discontinued and are heavily discounted. With earplugs, they are quite possibly the best helmets I have tried on the road!

I've got the Arai Chaser Haga rep, it was a toss up at the time between the RX7 in haga for me instead, as shoei doesnt fit me too well.

Opted for the Chaser in the end as the lining was much more comfier, due to the lining material. I've got a feeling the lining on the RX7 is some sort of sporty performance type material as it felt quite rough in comparison. Guys in the shop reckon that the Chaser is comfier due to being a more road riding focused helmet and the RX7 is a track helmet.

I'd like an RX-7 but even at cost price it's waaay too expensive for me. I'll have to try both on again and see whats what

Gmanxiii apart from comfort how did you find the chaser?

I think for the road yes, you would be better off with a chaser. The lining in the top of the range race lids are more influenced by having moisture wicking abilities. In summer, it's worth its weight in gold, but yes it is rough - I got used to it.

Some of the features you lose though with the chaser such as a chin flap/diffuser and breath deflector. What I do have to say is that the latest visors (RX-GP, Quantum, Chaser-V) offer a better fit for the pinlock. It doesn't obstruct your peripheral vision as much as the Corsair, chaser and viper-GT.

Saying that, wind noise should be nowhere near as loud as the cosairs.

Bear in mind the only lid I've had is my current Marushin so pretty much all these 'features' are new

OK so the RX7 GP is out of range so it's down to the Chaser and the XR. The XR1100 seems to be better in terms of viewing area, it comes with the pinlock and is a newer helmet overall. I dunno! like I said I'll have to try them on again

A plain black XR1100 does wonders... with dark visor. That said, I had mine in plain white and it looked like a simpson helmet... until i drunkenly took a sharpie pen to it and ruined the shell! Actually, I ruined it when i used nail varnish remover the next day! It's what happens when you think it's a good idea to write your name on the bottom of your lid and then draw devil horns on the crown after 5 pints and a platter of vodka shots!

Ask in the shop if you can try removing and replacing the visor on both models, that'll probably make your mind up.

I usually go for Shoei for that reason.

Or, if you watch my arai demonstrator videos, you realise that it's a pretty decent system and buy it for that reason! The fact that I can swap visors on my head is handy because if you're going on a bit of a blast, then it gets dark, and you REALLY want to get home, you'll save about 2 minutes - faffing about with your balaclava and earplugs and hair etc.

Key to the arai is sidepod maintenance. Again, see my videos. Admittedly, I broke 2 sets of sidepod covers because they were poorly lubed. The design of the newer SAI visor is a decent refinement and it's self sealing.

Yeah I tried to do a visor change at work but gave it to someone else because I thought I'd break it My Marushin just has one button on each side and you slide it off!

Same principle applies. I used servisol silicone grease. If you wanted something less viscous, then use the arai silicone gel.
