I havent got the HD but the regular desire. I dont know how high tech you are (im not ) but it perfectly fulfills my needs.
Any questions you particularly want to know? My phone is probably less well-specced though.
And as for calls if when you ring someone, you push the lock button, you cant touch any buttons with your face. However when someone answers or it goes to answer machine or it just cuts off the screen comes back on. If they answer or voicemail, then it goes back off after like 1 second. The screen also comes on if you move the phone, clever little thing

Things I'm interested in (off the top of my head) include...
 Usable battery life (not what the manufacturer claims, under perfect lab conditions!).
User friendly?
Features (email, web browsing, MP3 player, apps etc)
Does it work well as a fecking phone?
Durability
I narrowed it down to those two as I'm not having another Apple phone and won't touch anything with Windows on it. Android is the alternative and these phones seem best equipped. |

Righty ho then:
Battery life is shocking for the first few charges. Im talking half a day. If you stop it from syncing your facebook, weather, well everything then that will save battery. Little widget called power control which shows you if youre wifi, gps, bluetooth, syncing are on and how bright your screen is. I set mine to auto brightness as apparently that saves battery and i have the app killer thing which apparently saves battery, who knows? Also the live wallpapers are cool but use battery so I have a static one. I actually have an app which updates the wallpaper every day with bikepics.com's POD. Obviously, using the internet will sap more battery but meh. I reckon my phone could now last 3 days without a charge. Usually a day as I use teh internetz a lot. Every day probs an hour or so when Im away from home.
It is definately user friendly when you get used to it. Obviously everything new is going to be different but having come from an iPhone im sure you will get the hang of it! I dont even think mine came with a manual, but what male needs a manual  Seriously though, if you do struggle, there is an android forum which has EVERYTHING covered on it.
Email updates even if syncing isnt turned on aslong as you are connected to the internet. You can select the emails and read them first in just text. So for instance a business email will be fine. If it is a graphic email from a shop of some sort then you can open it as a webpage. Web browsing is excellent. My signal is shocking but when I can get connection, it is great. Thats on mobile internet, maybe the same as or maybe just behind my laptop. Wi fi is as fast, if not faster than the laptop. Don't really use the MP3 player as I have my iPod but it is very similar, as far as I can tell, to the iPhone interface. There are lots of great apps and being android, there are loads of people making stupid apps every second because it is so widely used! Apps that you see on the iPhone adverts they copy for android so I just download the ones I want I dont think I have come across an app yet that I couldnt find. Honestly, massive selection of apps.
Its does work well as a fecking phone Has the conversation thing for texting which is handy. Keyboard is good. Senses what you wanted to type and easy to make new words. Landscape texting is uber (cant believe I just said that ) fast and easy. You can also change the keyboard to the normal 1,2,3,4,5 etc format but I wanted to learn how to type with the qwerty keyboard. Calls are good. Camera is good. Obviously the hd will be better but still a grand phone.
Durability, hmmm. Now I dropped my phone several times. About a week after I last dropped it the screen was fucked. Now it was either that or the fact that i spilt milk on the screen that morning. However on the moisture detectors there was nothing but surerly if I had dropped it it would be an instant effect so God knows. I would recommend getting insurance for it and a case would be recommended to stop scratching etc. and absorbs impacts when dropping.

My phone is on a 24 month contract with virgin for £20 a month. That is 200 mins, 3000 texts, 3000 virgin to virgin minutes and 1gb internet. I struggle with the internet but overall a good package. I think it is £25 to everyone else though, well unless you have virgin tv and internet and phone at home?
But yeah, a great phone but you do poop it if anyone touches it Really fluid motion, good touchscreen, easy to use, really couldnt ask for more!

Galaxy S first thing to do is root the phone and it gets shot of the lag issues. Check this link out, makes the phone run much better.

Battery life on the Galaxy S is pretty poor to say the least, i charge it at my desk, have to charge it again in the morning as it is dead.
Phone is very user friendly any Android phone is tbh.
Features, great for on the bike if you plug in an external battery / emergency battery for long trips (i use one of these). Use it for Email / Games / MP3, there are a shedload of apps, not as many as apple but the Android market is growing.
Does it work well as a fecking phone? It is fine for me, the touch pad is easy to use (you have to root the phone or you get major lag issues).
Durability, i have dropped mine a few times but seems fine.
One thing you have not mentioned is syncing the phone with your PC, Samsung Kies is a pile of sh1T, one of the worst apps i have used (they have just brought an update out so may be better. Check out my problems with Samsung Kies here.
Another thing i like about the phone is it has a hardware volume button, so when you are on the bike and want to adjust you can tap the phone while in your pocket.
Swype- this is one of the best features for me, instead of tap typing texts or emails etc you drag your fingers over the letters and it puts the words together. Don't think i would get a phone without it now.

I like your style but I have got to pull up a chair and have a discussion about app killers on Android devices... They are just not needed and many people report the battery life is worse when you have one installed. Me included!
You're right about pretty much everything else though. One thing that makes a big difference is GPS. If you have that on, you'd better have a charger planned at your destination or even better get it on charge while you're GPSing.... I think mine will last about 6 hours with GPS on constant. Obviously, when you have GPS on, you have a map thing to look at, meaning the screen is on and the processor is going like billyo trying to draw the stuff it's downloading from the internet too - all extra causes of battery drain! |

Have you thought about the Nexus S? I've had all three and think the Nexus S is probably the best.
I don't want to keep spamming links, so just check the site in my sig, a very good battery saving guide for the Desire HD (Which applies to most devices) and a beginners guide to Android. 
GPS shouldn't kill your battery, unless you're using it. Leaving it on, it only operates if you have an app running that needs it.
WiFi on the other hand. If you're not connected it's constantly scanning networks. This will kill battery.
