Can't believe it the first time I took my new bike to work, when I got home I was manoeuvring my bike through the alley round my flat, slipped and dropped my hornet against the corner of the wall.

The exhaust took most of it, how much can you polish a scratch out of stainless steel ?

First bike I've had worth over grand.

Condolences man....been there done that. I tripped over a rake which then fell and scratched the shit out of my petrol tank about a week after i bought a mint firestorm. Is the exhuast just scratched or dented too? Personally i'd just use it as an excuse to get a new can!

You could use a fine wet/dry paper with a wooden block and finish with a metal polishing cream, but hopefully buffing it out with the cream to get it to shine as much as possible again !

Remember it's only the outer metal heat shielding casing that got scratched and they are replaceble, if need be if it's that bad!

Have you invested in frame sliders/bungs because they are worth their in gold to protect the fuel tank and rear plastic rim around the seating. They saved my bike when I had a spill on the motorway when some idiot in a car cut me off by crossing my path.

Just looked up the price of the shield £109 but I am tempted. I'll have a go with wet and dry first.

If it's removable can't you turn it upside down so the outside is on the inside?

You can polish small scratches out (i.e. swirly hairline marks) but big ones are more resiliant, especially if the steel of the can is too thin to remove much material.

New exhaust shield seems your best bet unless you were willing to paint your scratched one.

No worries the metal has a decent enough thickness as I've done it my hornet 900 - 2003 model

Perfect excuse to buy a tarty one or new exhaust, on the old hornets Akrapovic exhaust came with a carbon heat shield.

P500 is always good starter to remove the obvious looking scratches and use P1000/P1200 to follow up to get even smoother, if need be, then finnish off with the metal polish cream to get it to shine!
