Points on your licence.

One the way to work I merge onto a dual carriageway. Cars already on the dual carriageway never want to let you on. This morning I try to merge only to be met with a truck refusing to let me, I accelerate and so does he, resulting in me emergency braking on the grass/kerb verge.

Red mist descends and I floor it past said truck a few seconds later giving it the finger - at this point I notice a mobile speed camera there, just at the perfect moment to catch my one-off speeding moment.

I'm so gutted...

Anyways, I'm not going to go into why I feel completed and unfairly shafted, what I want to know is:

How much will (my first) 3 points bump up my insurance by?

How many points are we on this forum riding around with?

Bummer, dude Sad Isnt it always the way that you get captured when you're doing something relatively innocent. Life sucks.

I are got no points and have never had any *points to halo*

But I have had a ban before (albeit short).
Not nice Sad

It really Depends on the individual insurance company however the majority take 3 points with a pinch of salt and it rarely adversely affects a quotation in my experience. Six points however may see your premiums rocket unfortunately.

I've got 3 points - 60 in a 50 coming into London on the Westway in a Diesel Peugeot (Would've been happier if they'd have been 'earned' whilst riding the Bike to be perfectly honest!).

It's not the end of the world but I find I'm extra diligent now with the 3 points, more so than when I had a clean license.

When you say mobile speed camera, do you mean traffic cops with speed guns, if so, did they pull you over?

I was told by my insurance company that 3 points was classed as unlucky and that there usually isn't any increase in premiums, any more than that and they will start to hike your premium up.

The one where the cops sit in the back of a van and zap drivers as they go by, I wasn't stopped. Crying or Very sad

I went past one of these on the motorway a couple of months ago. Doing 110mph Confused I was really worried for a while but it's been some time since then and I've not heard anything. I suppose I could still get done for it if they just haven't got round to it yet. But I'm not going to worry about it.

They have only got a certain length of time to produce the penalty notice as far as I am aware!!! Not sure of the time, but I'm sure someone on here can confirm that!!!

My mistake, from the description it sounded like you were on a bike, except the fairly obvious car word.

Doh!

Apologies if OT but does anyone know how it affects insurance to have a named driver with 3 or 6 points?

Just wondering if the increase in premium wouldn't be as steep if the person with the points wasn't the principle driver Question

I don't know about the annual premium but a friend of mine recently attempted to place me as a named driver for his vehicle (brand new BMW 5 series) and the premium was £45.00 for a week as opposed to £15.00 had I not had 3 points on my license.

I believe the penalty notice has to arrive within 14 days if it's going to arrive at all.

I also made the bike assumption, but was wondering why you couldn't out acclerate a truck... Embarassed
