java editors

what do you people use to edit java?
netbeans is good, but way to hefty for the stuff i am learning at the moment.
the main feature that i want is good code completion (because i am lazy) and joint second syntax highlighting and code wrap.
can be a linux or windows program. not too bothered.
are there any alternatives to netbeans that are just an editor not the whole IDE package?
or is there a way in which to just use the netbeans editor without all the other crap that you have to load

Gedit for me. IT doesn't have code completion though. Netbeans etc run slow as fuck as they're written in Java Laughing

Notepad++ was always pretty good I thought.

I use Eclipse. Still an IDE but I use it for C development as well so its nice to just stick in one environment.

I use vi for a lot of programming, and also mark up.

Use comments and keep code tidy works far better than relying on multi-coloured fancy stuff Smile

Notepad++ is superb, but for what you want to do - I would suggest Eclipse.

It's a little bloated (not as bad as NetBeans) but is much better for more advanced stuff, and supports a shed load of languages.

As for Vi, sadist!
I used to use it all the time, and hated it!!!!!

Reluctantly, I'd have to say Eclipse. I detest it, but it's about 5% less sociopathic and bloated than Netbeans, which seems to be striving to beat Moore's Law into whimpering submission.

If you're going to use Java, then you might as well take advantage of an IDE that will carry some of the load in terms of syntax checking, static analysis, fixing imports and all that funky jazz from the future.

vi's sole grace is that it's available everywhere. We'll never be rid of it. Like herpes.
