The bike has been SORN for 2 years and has remained untouched apart from the odd wheel down the drive to get into my mums garage. I would kick it over and get it to fire but eventually over time all the petrol has gone and only compression is left. With no bike at present and none that actually take my fancy why not just sort out this beast and use it as god intended?

I do have several questions in my mind that are stopping me from breaking out the credit card but thats something to discuss later.

Arrow The history

I originally bought this bike on the net in 2006, had it delivered in a crate and assembled it in the hallway for less than £600. The registration from the DVLA and insurance was a breeze and it was all good to go.

Being a little (see the pun there?) run around about town kind of bike it was ideal. From later tests with a GPS unit I did manage 45mph from the 110cc engine. The small tank held enough petrol to go to the moon several times before refilling and the seat comfy despte some major vibrations through the male G spot.

The wife then crashed it into a wall in the back garden in preparation for her CBT:

There was some cosmetic damage to the front end but still ran. After a few weeks of looking sad and sorry for itself I took a final ride for it to be SORN at my mums house. Its basically been stood there ever since.

At this stage I'm not sure what to do.

I could buy some 'performance' upgrades for this engine to boost a few bhp with a change in gear ratios, or buy a 140-150cc Lifan engine or even splash £400+ on a race engine for 20+bhp. This power in a bike that weighs 70kg should be ample for some one wheeled fun.

Or, go completely mad in time and follow Binge in the TZR engine stakes or maybe if possible an RS125 instead?

I should make it clear that the only part of the bike I am happy to stay is the frame.

had a quick browse on ebay, a lot of rs125 engines on there, all going for £200+ though...

There's quite a few cbr125, tdr125 and I saw a tzr125 engine on there, although it looked to be missing the top end Confused


I have to ask...Is that number plate even legal placed facing skywards the way it is on the pictures? I can imagine getting shown the big end of a truncheon from mr.plod if he caught you? Laughing

An RS125 engine would take a lot of messing around as the output shaft is on t'other side.

I have an nsr125 engine, exhaust, loom etc. I need a monkey rolling chassis and V5. Probably get an extended frame though.

I was looking at a project with an extended frame, looks strange, but if you can accomodate a larger engine then its all good. Anything could fit if you shoe horn it into place but the TZR seems the most common, shame that most on eBay have parts missing. Ideally a working donor bike would be the easiest option but its something to think about in the future as at the moment I want it on road before thinking along these lines.

I do and I don't have an idea in my mind of what I want, USD forks are a definitive yep. However, I have seen some with a twin disc set up, they do of course cost a little bit more. Not sure if the would be needed but would look cool.

Other main area of concern is the chain and swing arm (which in turn includes the shocks). Any extension on the swingam leads to a problem with chain tension under load and slapping the swingarm, and all that I've seen have no chain guard so could be one problem come MOT time.

I do like the +14cm mono shock combination that I have but for safety and comfort may go back to twins. Also something that long also has made problems with the number plate hence why its just been lobbed back on. Twin shocks will also allow for a rear mudguard or hugger. Not sure how long but may be a little shorter and whether braced or un braced is still up in the air too.




Started dismantling the bike a little only to be stopped by the weather. I was getting a cold builders bum bent over the bike. I do need to make a red neck style stand to support the engine in the frame so front and rear ends can be removed.

Tank off, will have to look to see of it is indeed leaking or its the fuel line / tap instead. I like this one:

Not sure on the how many litres though. Looking at the mounts and way its raised off the bike I suspect its less than 5 litres (if my memory serves my correct, the current one is 7.5). An additional catch tank is also available and could look uber cool mounted on one side and oil tank the other.

The only rust I have seen is on the head and the wheels, both are steel, nothing that a little paint couldn't sort out post cleaning and the 8" wheels will be replaced with some new 10" ones so not too fussed with these anyways.

In the couple of years the bike was on the road, it racked up 760 odd miles. Not bad considering it was a run around and not a serious bike for distances but was used in all weathers come rain or shine.

It fit quite well with just the rear seats folded down as the front wheel popped down in the rear passengers leg space meaning no straps or tie downs needed.

Well the credit card has been broken out.

New front end has USD forks, CNC aluminium yolks, bar risers, uprated disc brake, master cylinder & caliper, aluminium hub, speedometer drive & cable.

Not sure what style of bars to get yet so will have a think about it when the forks are being fitted as I need the mirrors and quick action throttle / levers as well. I fancy something low but untill the tank, seat and front are fitted and I'm sat on it I won't really know how low.

For the engine:

Arrow 22mm performance carb
Arrow air filter
Arrow Performance 5 pin cdi
Arrow 420 x 100 link chain
Arrow Front sprocket 15 teeth x 420 (2 down on stock)
Arrow Rear sprocket 30 teeth x 420
Arrow OOracing performance Exhaust

^ Guestimated increase of torque and BHP by 30% on the stock 110cc engine.

The sprockets may be an experiment as -2 front and -5 rear? This is all coming as a kit so will see how it performs but whether I'd benefit from trying to go larger up front I'm not sure as 18t seems to be the biggest and anything more than that is not standard, same with the rear.

I've gone for the cafe racer seat and bobber tank and will be sticking with the +16cm swingarm and mono shock but upgrading the rear drum to a disc, this should be an uncluttered look.

To add a touch of bling to this bad boy, rear sets!

Both parcels arrived today and to put a long story short, some of it will be going back and others need additional parts to make fit.

Tank, too small and looks wrong on bike as mounted really high.

Cafe racer seat wont fit the existing fitment holes in the frame?

Rearsets are a puzzle, I figured how to semi fit it but am puzzled at the correct placement. Nothing lines up on this one.

Chain guard doesn't fit the swing arm.

I tried fitting the wheels and need spacers for both front and rear to help with quite a serious off set.

The rear brake conversion could pose problems but without the wheels, swing arm and foot pegs back on I won't know.

I may have to rethink some of the choices and go for some more original replacements.

I feel sad.

There is someone on the monkeybike forum that is doing just this hybrid at the moment so when finished I may see how easy it turns out to be.

Well I'm off to OOracing in Kent tomorrow as I'm too tight to pay return postage even though its a 3 hour round trip as I need other items to replace the ones that are not fitting or are needed to finish. Pretty much the only things that are keepers are the wheels and maybe, maybe the 'destriction kit' as I've already fitted the exhaust and yet to fit the carbs so hope these fit otherwise its another couple of hundred of quid that needs exchanging!

Finished a night shift this morning and went straight to work for the next four hours solid, my back is killing me now! The main reason being having to redo work over and over again due to me not thinking first or not realising that it wont fit 'that' way and needs adjusting again and again...

First thing to look at was the rear brake light, it would come on but no brake light or brake light and no lights. I tried swapping the bulb round to no avail, I must have bought a bulb with slightly different lugs as it wouldn't fit when turned around. A new bulb is better than what I first thought was going to be chasing the loom checking switches and connections.

Front end was next.

This was a headache to fit due to me being a wally. I couldn't get the headbearings to fit so that the bars would turn, when done tight the yokes were solid? After 3 or 4 different fittings and various combinations of the bearings and covers I realised that the old bearings had left their covers behind and needed knocking out.

Brick Wall

After a couple of swift blows with screwdriver and hammer they popped out and the new bearings fitted. Amazing what happens if you look properly.

I need a spacer to give quite a large offset for the front wheel as it barely fits at the moment in between the forks and hits the brake caliper too.

Need a new light housing as the previous one was cracked when the wife crashed it head first into a wall. As his is where all the wires and connections get hidden I've left the old one attached for now instead of having spaghetti junction to contend with in a few days.

Other things needed for the front end:

Arrow Handle bars, not sure on style yet will see if I can see a few first before deciding.
Arrow Grips and a quick action throttle
Arrow Mirrors
Arrow Front mudguard

Twin discs would look awesome as these new discs are huge in comparison to the old ones on the 8 inch wheels, but £450 is quite a bit too much money for now.

Took the carb off to switch to the new one only to find that it wont fit on the existing manifold and needs the one it comes with to be fitted. Only downside is that I didn't have the screw bit to take it off and to change it over so thats added to the list of things needed. Shame as I was hoping to fire it up with the new race CDI to make sure it still turns and fires.

The biggest headache today was the rear sets not fitting and subsequently the rear disc conversion also not fitting at all.

Mad

No matter what combination of fitments or adjustments I tried it just wouldn't go smoothly and was miles off from fitting.

There were some issues with the rear sets, one being that the rear brake switch was now in front and no way of mounting it or even connecting it to be able to work? The other being that there is no way a side stand can be fitted or used with them. Carrying a paddock stand to work every day on the shoulders would be an inconvience to say the least.

As the rear brakes would no longer be discs I tried the larger 10 inch wheels with the old drum set up and they fit lovely and don't look too bad either. Thats one less spacer needed tomorrow.

The exhaust follows different lines to the other one that I had but looks good and even comes with a little baffle to screw in or not. Should keep the leg warm in the winter.

Random things needed still include new tank as the old one has a slow leak and has stained the engine from it, a new gear lever as old one is bent and maybe some new sprockets* and thats it before MOT, running it on the road and going to the next phase?









* Current is 17t front and 35t rear, in the desriction kit the front is 15t and 30t on the rear? How the hell can this be of any benefit to man nor beast when stock has a larger front for speed and even a larger rear for acceleration?

18t seems to be the biggest you can get for the front so may stick with the stock gearing rather than opt fo the smaller set up to be pootling at less than 40mph!

gorgeous bike you have there mate. I too have a monkey.

Keep the stock engine, too much messing about with trying to fit pegs, and trying to make the sprockets line up if you replace it.


Take a look at your sprockets. Mine will cruise at 40-45 and top out about 55 maybe touching 60.

I'm running 8" wheels, 17-26t setup. Chain clears the swingarm fine... (running a +10cm swinger)

If you are running 10" wheels you will want something more like 17-30. I used to have a monkey with 10s that ran 17-28t and it was a tad overkill on the top end. Third gear used to let me do 50mph on its own Laughing

Drove the 140+ mile round trip down to OOracing and my, what a bunch of friendly blokes. Seeing the other side to an online store is a refreshing sight as the service I got today was top notch.

After discussion regarding a few issues, the front end is on, bars / grips and CNC throttle ready. I'm going to opt for some M&P bar end mirrors after seeing a bike with them on today instead of the insect like ones that are standard.

New foot stands and aluminum pegs on, CNC gear lever completes the foot controls.

I did however finish the day on a lull, the new 22mm carb is not the best fit!

This thread makes me want a monkey bike... Cool

Seen quite a few guys around on pit bikes and monkey bikes recently, guess that it's a form of cheap and easy transport, £600 for a brand new bike thats capable of 60mph (depending on model etc) which is pretty good on fuel.. cant be a bad way to go as no doubt you've got a smile on you're face all the time Laughing
