Whilst the graphics are pretty and all, that looks to be incredibly boring. The opponents have slightly less AI than the average domino Confused

Yes, the SP looks pants. But I'm thinking more along the lines of MP. Yeah? Thumbs Up Laughing

Could work as long as it's not combo based and there is a decent guard/block system.

Or everyone is just drunk/tripping and looking to wave their arms around and shout "Sparta!" Laughing

Yeah, I think that's about in the right ballpark. Laughing

Soul Blade (Soul Calibre) on the consoles had a block move. That game could/can actually be fought half intelligently, I've dispatched all the button-mashers who tried that tactic. Maybe this one will have a 1st-person mode as well.

Soul Calibre is one of my all time favourite series, it's the only reason I still own a Dreamcast Wink

With all the new controllers (move, kinect etc) I'm interested to see how the genre moves forward, would like to see a decent sword sim instead of arcade repetition.

Morrowind and Oblivion had a desent block/slash/stab with force recoil based on the weapon and impact system when using a single handed weapon and shield in 1st or 3rd person. Apart from combo attacks and force recoil l dont think theres much else you can add on a hack n slash game that has,nt already been done.

I've tried only Soul Calibur and Assassin's Creed. SC is good, for what it is, AC is utter shite. Didn't know there were others. Neutral

Just looks like dynasty warriors, which provides about 10 minutes of entertainment before becoming boring. Multiplayer could be interesting though if done properly.

I loved soul calibre on the original Xbox, me and mates would spend hours on that, I was so disappointed with the version that came out on the Xbox 360.

The best one I had was when it was called Soul Blade (maybe it was version one?). The xBox one (SCII?) is more glitzy and fast but it lost something.

IIRC it's possible to get the Greek girl naked? We had lots of fun pause-framing it when the girls were...hmm...'compromised'. Laughing

Not much strategy in 'run here, see him first win the gun battle if not you die, respawn rinse repeat' gaming is going a very bad way with the whole console thing taking over, games are more graphics than gameplay now-a-days, my little brother is 11 he made me die a little inside when he called CS:S (the daddy of all fps's) crap because 'the graphics are rubbish' Sad

Thats Dynasty Warriors with different clothing on.

DW was an entertaining game, but by the end of it levels that took 40 mins at the start can be done in 2/3 minutes as you simply run strainght to the big boss.

I had a conversation with a mate recently (while drunk, admittedly) in which he asked me what I thought was the best game ever.

I said Elite.

a) he'd never heard of it.
b) when I explained it he said "the graphics sound crap, it's well old"
c) I almost had to slap him.
d) he's 30, not 11 years old.

Elite rocked. Unfortunately there was a bug in it and I became marooned on a planet.

I can't believe it's 26 years old and no-one (to my mind) has bettered it. Everything's about graphics and fancy cutscenes over gameplay these days.

People expect a story to unfold these days: there wasn't so much by way of narrative in Elite. However, I will admit to thinking it is a truly excellent game.

There is a lot to be said for being involved in a consistent narrative, though; Deus Ex being a prime example - hell, even Final Fantasy VII, if archaic graphics are a deciding feature.

As much as I enjoy the 'sod the rest of you, I'm going to explore a universe' style of game (and I genuinely do), the majority seem determined to make escapism a social event, thus spawning a huge following for (in my opinion) crap like Warcraft.

I think that Minecraft is about the closest we're likely to get to a modern free-form exploration game that's totally open, in the way the Elite is.

Narratives are fine, like you say, but I get frustrated with so many games which involve playing the game for two minutes and then sitting through five minutes of cutscenes - a process which repeats constantly. Variety is the spice of life etc. but I like being able to bugger off and do what I like, especially when you still have specific goals (e.g. within Elite; completing missions, upgrading your ship, trading, chasing 'Elite' status etc).

Never play Final Fantasy XIII, then. Your blood pressure may never recover.
