I want to get insurance on my mums car but as I am 19 and have just passed my test it is going to cost a fortune.

A quick quote says to add me as a second driver, it will cost 2.5k a year and just me as a driver on my own is 1.8k.

Is there any known way of lowering this at all? It has to be 2 drivers minimum. My mum pays £240 a year at the moment, tpft.

Can I get insured for a month? I know I could before I did my test but now it doesn't seem possible.

How much?

Jeez, that's a rip off. I can remember being really pissed about paying a grand when I was 17!!

How to lower it: shop around, raise the voluntary excess. Pray?

TPTF

Mum as main driver you as additional, make sure you have entered any no claims your mum has got and protect them, pray to god that admiral comes up in the cheapest, they offer admiral only no claims bonus to named drivers.

Which means next year if you want to go onto your own policy (with admiral) you can say you have a years no claims.

I know this because it's exactly what I'm going through now! I'm 17 and have a quote for £890 on a 1.4.

Oh yeah and third party fire & theft comes up cheaper than third party only.... Thumbs Up

You now owe me about (hopefully) a grand or more Mr. Green

Hope this helps! Thumbs Up

Just remember if you are the main user of the car and not your mum, you are fronting, or committing insurance fraud, you wont be legally be insured in the event of an accident, or being pulled by the Police as they are checking these days.

If you do front you will have your policy cancelled/revoked and find getting insurance later on a complete arse, so ignore what bikertomm has said as that is fronting, the way he has written it and of course his thread on it, points to him fronting, hopefully he gets caught for it as well, as if he is the main driver but has listed his mum as the main driver he most likely will.

Don't take advice of someone telling you to put your mum or dad as a main driver when they clearly wont be the main driver, you will not be insured, and when you get caught or have an accident you will get royally fucked for it, policy will be revoked, potential fine/prison for fraud, of course 6 points/ban for no insurance.

And it isn't a case of the insurance company proving that you are the main driver, they don't have to, they are insurance companies they will make their own decision and wont pay out.

What you need to do
Pass Plus saved me £130 when I did it years back
You as main policy holder and main user of the vehicle
Add your mum as a named driver
Add your dad as a named driver
Mileage be honest, 8,000 is a good guesstimate
Value of car seems to make little difference

If you are going on as a named driver for occasional use, then what I did was stay off the policy until I needed to borrow the car, then I was added to the policy for a week, or a few days, most insurance companies will do this IIRC.

But please don't front.

Pits, I do genuinely share this car with my mum & dad and am not the main driver, so I'm not committing fraud at all.

For me

TPO cover on a Volvo T5 Estate,

£3500

TPFT cover, more expensive surely...

£3100

Add my Dad to the policy as a named driver, more expensive right? adding another driver.

£2500

Changing parking from on the drive to on the road.

£2400

Adding my mum to the policy as well

£2200

Lost another £100 by changing my job.

Many ins co's will say that if you are not the main driver than using the car for commutes to work (some even list times) If you get caught in these times you could well end up in the above situation with no ins and a large bill.

These crazy quotes are plain stupid and the main reason roads full on uninsured drivers.

Pretty much this, in the event of a bump you will need to prove to the insurance company that you don't use the car often at all, you're young and just passed your test so you will be out in a fair bit. Insurance company will look at it like this
You have had a smash at X time in the day
You are a named driver on the policy
Your parents have fronted the policy to get you cheaper insurance.
Insurance revoked, they pay out for the third party, police will more than likely be involved.

You will then need to prove that you aren't the main driving, how are you going to do that? Not a case of "well I was just going down the shops in it, first time I have used it this week" as their first question will be "prove it?" you can't.

You need to do it the other way around and add your parents to your policy.

Chris, why the hell are you trying to insure a T5? You do know they are awful right? Suspension is crashy and very uncomfortable, FWD with 250bhp makes 1st and 2nd gear useless if you boot it, but most of all they just don't go around corners very well, and the T4 isn't much better, you need to feather them around corners at speed otherwise you do just understeer off into what ever road furniture as close by.

That said they are bloody good fun in a straight line Laughing Laughing

That is exactly what I did that came up with 2.5k.
My mums car is a pug 306 1.9 turbo.
I will try changing jobs and other stuff around to see what comes up. I have 2 years no claims on my bike which I might be able to transfer if I did it by speaking on the phone to them.

I am not going to be the main driver. I will only be using it for doing a bit of ferrying around and say I need to get to work and it is pouring with rain and cba with the bike etc. My mum uses it almost everyday for work/taking my sister to school.

Well I have been driving for over 20 years now, I have had my own insurance all that time...I drive a small insurance group car, I have never claimed for a car accident, I've never caused an accident, I have no convictions on my licence, I live in a rural area and yet this year my insurance has leapt up £100 since last year.

To bring it down to a reasonable rate, I have just upped the voluntary excess (which scraped about £85 off).

But it is ridiculous, and it's getting worse. I heard on the radio it's because more and more people are suing for tiny accidents, minor stuff that would have ordinarily been sorted out between drivers in the past and not gone through the courts. The whole no win no fee vultures are making the money...and we are suffering the repercussions in our policies.

Try being me. No matter what car, policy holder or named driver, or how hard I look, I can't get a quote under £3,000.

£3,000 would pay for a bloody nice motorbike that would last more than a year.

How can the police check if you're fronting.

Copper "Excuse me son, you're only a named driver on this policy."

Perp "First time I've driven it all week officer, my mum uses it every other day for work"

Job done.

And to be honest I see no problem with "fronting", same as the restricted license thing. Be aware of the risks and make the call for yourself.

The amount of money insurers are charging is crazy nowadays. Up 58% in one year. Jog on.

If you can get one over on them, then every credit to you.

This man speaks the truth.

I have had my car licence for nearly 3 years, and I haven't driven since I passed my test because of the outrageous prices of car insurance.

As the car is his mums and she has been driving it herself, adding the OP onto the policy does not make it a fronted policy FFS.

The OP will likely not be covered to commute, however it would be up to the insurance company to prove this was the case, and he wasn't simply driving close to his work.

As far as getting 6 points for driving without insurance, well obviously Pits really doesnt have a clue. The car is insured, the third party liability is guarranteed, so has nothing to do with the police.

I have just been sorting my car insurance out, and have found that it is more expensive (by around £200) to insure the car TPFT rather than fully comp Rolling Eyes no i am officially confused.

Only looked by chance as i am going to be selling the car very shortly(not replacing as emigrating) and didnt want to fork out top whack for insurance when i wouldnt get it all back

Pay monthly.

Cancel the DD when you leave.

Very often the case, as different underwriters may quote on comp.
