Looks like a biggy, 8.4 earthquake out in the sea north of tokyo. Videos of it coming in are pretty epic.

Hetz i hope your kid and missus are alright if they are still over there.

They reckon its the wave is going to hit Tiawan within the next 30 minutes and Hawaii in a couple of hours. Looks like I'll be watching the news in a few hours. Bet some mad hawaiian dude is out with his board!

Can you imagine being on one of the Pacific Islands being told that in an hour the Tsunami will hit, and it's higher than the island you live on?

I remember being sat on Koi Samui beach with my mate at about 5 in the morning just as the sun was about to come up and I said imagine with all this partying going on, you looked out to see and just saw a huge tsunami wave coming towards you.... sent a shiver down my spine. I had a nightmare where I was swallowed up by a tsunami once as well, one of those that feels so real you still need a minute after waking up to check that THAT isn't the dream....really wouldn't want to experience once in real life...

All the best, please let us know that you are OK, Good Luck! I'll be thinking of you.

You can still see the wave moving on the BBC, It seems so much worse when you can see it happening.

On a separate point, when did we outsource news readers.

I'm great at bad English, and this is completely gibberish

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YYLfzvMabpg

Loss of life doesn't seem that bad so far, just totalled a lot of buildings. The Japanese are slightly more community minded than the Yanks. Give it a year and everything will be bigger and prettier there.

Still sad though.

Its just been upgraded to an 8.9, 7th strongest on record ever.

The currents from the tsunami have created a huuuuuuge whirlpool, vid here:-

Glad to hear it - they was actually my first thought on seeing the news!

Always seems a little more real watching disasters when you know someone who is there, even a couple of times removed.

Glad little Kawashima is OK too.

Bendy - sounds like a lucky escape by your lot too.

On the topic of nuclear power stations and obviously we have the luxury of hindsight. But does it not appear extremely short sighted to build Nuclear Power stations in an earthquake sensitive area?!
