Hondas are more reliable (naturally), plus gear driven cams. USD forks on the RVF.

Other bikes can shift a bit more in stock form, but are more fragile. I think the ZXR makes the most power, but you can get HRC kits for the VFR and RVF (and even the CBR400RR NC29).

Most commonly raced 400s are probably the VFR / RVF and ZXR.

I personally like the looks of the zxr400, was going to get one at one point but the guy i was buying it off let me down and i happened to see a gsxr600 that day so bought that instead.

They all break. The yamahas seem to break the most, but I think the only 2 400s on this forum that I can recall being very reliable were fazed's RVF400 - not trying to say that it was rather well cared for, but he did strip it right down on the bench to clean the inside because he wanted to, and phoenix's ZXR400, which just seemed to work rather well and then he sold it.

. The general consensus is the FZR400 is the most fragile, the CDI on the GSX-R400's is crap and takes £120+ and 6 months to order.

Let see...

Yamaha - Luke's engine had a small problem, and they don't use strong chains on Yamahas.
Kawasaki - Nice clutches. Nice engines. Nice wheel bearing. And you do get good chains on these, as my chain out lived the engine on ZX6R
Honda- No real problems when I had a Honda
Suzuki - Smooth gearboxes (literally)

My honda has had a few glitches, but its got 28,000 miles. Engine is still A1 condition. rides lovely, 12 years old.

But obviously over that time/mileage many things need to be replaced/done ie bearings, fork oil etc. So make sure its good in all areas whichever 400 you buy... Otherwise it could get expensive

Personally id get a Honda, becasue they are genrally very good sportbikes, and "genrally" the most reliable (although some may argue)...

Mind you, i dont know too much about the rest, riding wise. Everyone knows Honda make great bikes, which is why i bought mine.

its been rated bad, because its been done before lots, and fairly recently, you didnt bother to search for a thread which if you think about it, would be a popular topic

pretty much every newish biker, asks people what is the best out of a certain group of bikes, me included

but experience shows the best way to decide is to blag a ride on one, the 400's especially wont leave each other on the roads....so its pretty much down to which one you like the best and brand loyalty

vfr and cbr, are a bloody close match, but owners tend you love their bike and hate the other, the zxr is slightly faster, but it isnt gonna be leaving the 400's behind, test ride... Thumbs Up
