Well since I have no tools really, it's time to buy some and learn by myself!

And I have used the kit shown in your second link quite regularly (a friend has it) and apart from the overly brittle files it is a very good kit for the price.

Reserved both! Hopefully my bike can get fixed so I can pick it up, or I can walk it and carry them home.

Big tool kit you have!

Just expand and buy extra tools as and when you need to do different jobs.

Immediate things I can suggest along side it are:

Torque wrench
Impact Driver
Pliars/needle nose/Locking pliars
Mallet/Hammer or both
Breaker bar
feeler gauges if you fancy checking valve clearances
Steel rule (decent straight edge)
Tape measure
Stanley knife
Plusgas (penetrating oil)

You will always need more and more tools but its not a bad starting point to build on as you take on more and more of the work on your bike Thumbs Up

Thank you Bacon. Bookmarked!

I never really learnt how to do anything mechanical without a father figure so I am totally useless. Half of that I don't even know LOL.

I know a Haynes manual doesn't teach you everything, but a good starting point!

I've got that set.

My only negative comment is why so many imperial sockets.

I'm nearly 38 and been driving and playing with cars & now bikes for 21 years.

In this time I have never needed an imperial bit.

I got the smaller Halfrauds socket set. £49 quid advance one. Does all that I need it to do. Followed it up today with an impact driver and have a torque wrench ordered on Egay.

Halfords, so not amazing, though ok; were it me, I'd go for this: https://amzn.to/eZmvnQ. Have to get separate spanners, but gives you the choice to get better choices.

Something like this for the spanners is very useful: https://amzn.to/eildfI - gives you a very useful range.

Not convinced on the Halfords stuff for a few things - 12 point, but limited range, imperial. Really like the wall drive offered by the Draper Expert 6 point stuff.

One thing I've found is I need 2 full sets of spanners, i.e. one for either end of the bolt you are undoing.

My comments 2 above might sound a bit negative regarding the imperial sockets. But the quality of the set is very very good.

If they had thrown in a torque wrench and got rid of the imperial sockets I would have give it 5/5, otherwise I give it 4/5.

What is the issue with imperial?

Luckily not, as I still can't work out while they're not popular!

I manage to break a lot more bolts with wall drive sockets - even with rusty knackered stuff they still manage to grip the nut well enough to break the bolt instead Smile.

Draper have a lot of cheap stuff too... and I do own some of that cheap stuff LOL, plus Halfords is a store.

Maybe the cheap branding that killed DFS, even though they actually had a lot of expensive and good sofa's, and when people turned up, they were shocked at the prices and went elsewhere.

Possibly similar to Draper.

Anyone care to enlighten me what the differences are from both? I am going to buy tomorrow.

There is no point buying imperial sockets unless you have an old British bike or a Harley, even then I think only the Harley engine uses imperial sizes.

Halfords also do cheap stuff.

Draper expert six point is the one to go for - wouldn't be too bothered by the others. Prefer my Sealey professional set for 'feel'/looks, but for utilitarian use, it's the six point wall drive that does it.

Draper expert is equivalent to Halfords Professional, though you may not get the life time guarantee, which I admit is useful.

I do like the flexi headed ratchet spanners which Halfords current has on offer - making them pretty good value.

So basically it will be no use for anything.

Is the Draper set better then? RRP is 300 quid it seems.

As you're starting out, the Halfords stuff is as good as anything.

OK, you won't use the AF/Imperial stuff, but you're getting a lot of tools for your money, if you buy both sets.

The difference between different makes of tools is almost impossible to guage, unless you're talking about buying stuff by Snap On or Facom, which is proper professional kit and well worth the (huge) amount of money it costs, if you're using it every day.

I would wager out of all those imperial sockets you might you the 1/4 once or twice.

Amazon only have half the description of the draper kit. It is more expensive and you will have to buy spanners but I would rather have the draper one I think.

Thanks. I am going to buy the tool kit in the second link, and that has spanners, so if the Draper set has more tools I'll likely use, then the spanners aren't too much of a lost if I don't buy the Halford's set.

Basically 150 PC of stuff I can use for Draper seems better than maybe 100 or whatever I can, and the other 50 I'll unlikely use at all.

It will be just for my bike, and maybe a car in the future.

What else am I likely to use it for? Any type of house work?

Sorry to sound so noobie.

The Halfords is a 'jack of all trades', but my issue is that you don't get as good coverage as I'd like across each area.
And to expand, you're going to have a lot of duplicates.

For instance the draper has allen bits up to 14mm. I've got a similar spanner set to the one I linked to and I find it very useful going to the big sizes for all sorts of things - stuff around the home (plumbing) easily grabbing to do a wheel spindle, using on the bolt where you're using a big socket on the nut. While the halfords range of spanners is a bit more limited and you don't get flexi head ratchets.
