Ever want something so bad you pay WAY over the odds for it?
Ever been rewarded for paying over the odds?
I have.

June 2010, I was surfing ebay and money was burning a hole in my pocket. Cue me finding a moped that was about 2 miles away from me, Stated as an "MZ MOPED BLACK" and knowing MZ didnt make any barebones stepthrough mopeds in the late 80's, I thought I'd go and have a look.
250 quid cash in my pocket as 'Just in case' money hoping not to go over 100 quid
I arrived to find a rather strange looking device.

Cutting a long story short. I left 250 quid lighter somehow.

Turns out it's actually an italian bike made my a bust company named Bologna Motor who sold their remaining stock to MZ and only about 100 were shipped to the UK between the mid and late 80's

https://www.bikechatforums.com/download.php?id=77805

Since then I've meant to sort out a few issues on it and never got around to it. But now I have grown tired of seeing it in my spare bedroom unused and I miss riding around on it like a 9 year old on a bmx

However. Since I got the bike I have attempted to solve issues several times and it's actually just got worse.
Someone stole the engine mounting bolts from it and the handlebars when it was in parts so those need sorting too

Checklist of things to do!

[ ] Replace now snapped exhaust
[ ] Replace front forks (Pitted and seized)
[ ] Fit either standard cylinder or big bore kit to replace scored parts
[ ] Weld on right footpeg again
[ ] Sort out a new chain and sprockets
[ ] Replace speedo drive
[ ] Get new handlebars
[ ] Replace front tyre (Perished)
[ ] Replace engine mounting bolts
[ ] Sort out kickstart slipping issues
[ ] Tax the bike
[ ] MOT it
[ ] Insure it

I will update this as I go along! First job is the engine mounting bolts ^.^

You click the 'notify me when a reply is posted' tick box when you post a reply (you should be able to edit your post and do it). Thumbs Up

Good project. I don't like the old school step-throughs, but 'nostalgia projects' are awesome Cool

Right, Next payday is wednesday. Definitely buying me a big tub of assorted bolts.
If I have enough spare cash, I may order that exhaust from 1977mopeds.
so by the end of next week, She should be back to a whole state bar missing handlebars and exhaust.

Just thought I'd let you guys know...
She currently has Suzuki TS125 rear shocks on purely because I was bored =P so it has an extra 10cm ride height at the back haha
I have the original shocks but they're a lil tired, May replace them eventually

By the way, what are your opinons? Should I stay standard with this? or bolt on some performance parts?

I can get various cylinder kits...
Can convert to CDI instead of points
I have a choice of about 7 different expansion pipes available
All sorts of carbs to chose from
Various intake manifolds

Could probably get her to about 50mph ish

Respectable Modification IMO.

Keep it looking as standard as possible, but have it running and sounding sweet..

If you can bolt on a few performance parts, all the better Cool

I'm sorry but i think £250 for that was a very good way to throw away your hard earned IMO! It would have been worth £50-100 tops i would have said.

I bet you could have brought a tatty non taxed/MOT'd bike like a GPZ550 for the same price as that moped.

Old mopeds can look cool when modified and customised however, and if your just doing it for the laughs then it would be a nice little project, if you'd have got it cheap instead.

Yep... I know I wasted a LOT of cash... But what's done is done...

Also! Just had a run over the bike and even MORE work needs doing.

The rear shocks have given up the ghost internally

The insides of the indicators have been stolen by the person I was sharing a garage with at the time of stripdown

The engine cooling fan has a massive crack in it so this needs replacing

One of the plastic cowls for the engine is also cracked...

*Sigh* I'll get there eventually. Laughing

MORE WORK!
The original holder for CEV switchgear for the indicators and horn were on my handlebars when they were stolen...
So now I need new switchgear =(
I've decided that I WILL rebuild this engine from the crank up. Yes it'll take longer and waste more money but at least the paranoia will be gone. There's not really much there to be honest.

Small update, Found me a supplier of all engine parts in Italy.
Just ordered new fan for 16 euros including priority shipping.

Tempted to get one of the sports exhaust as a replacement.
70 euro's shipped and I have my pick of 2...
See attatched.
Black one is Sito Cobra
Unpainted one is Polini. The polini one tempts me more as I trust the name!

I'd go with polini, but I'd probably suggest they'd be as good as each other and performance wise, you won't be able to tell the difference.

I think I will... But I must admit the cobra looks better
EDIT: OMG I just found out they do full circle cranks and all sorts for these. This shit goes DEEP, YO! =P
FURTHER EDIT TO SAVE NEW POST: Doing a 12v Lighting coil conversion on this as well, Replacing my standard ignition coil with CDI and using ignition coil as lighting. Yes it works, tried and tested on these engines
