This is verging on the requirement for a "what on earth are you talking about?" rating Confused

John Lewis, I think? Confused

That is a massive bonus...

I'm disappointed though; I googled it hoping to find mention of some new bonus for cohabiting couples, or something...

I was talking to a mate who works as an auditor for a big insurance company, anyway he was having a moan about how all he was getting was 5% as a bones this year.

Out of interest i asked "so how much does that amount to?"

He replied "only £8k"

Shocked

I was gob smacked, i just kinda said "ermmmmm ok, and to think i got a free cup of coffee for going into work when it snowed, what is the world coming to?"

Boots and new lid.

Wasn't last years only 13%?

I was expecting 15% at most.

I got a whopping £72 for my first ever bonus Razz I only work 2 days a week though, and people who work full time at my place barely got much more because of the tax man, pension funds etc.

15% last year, 13% the year before IIRC.

And boring stuff for me. Cooker, car insurance. Possible a leather jacket, or B&W Zepplin if funds allow. From JL of course. Wink Laughing

My bonus this year was ok ish.
Not as much as the flush days of 7 years ago ... but better than last years which was a big fat zero.

Don't be jealous mate, that must be one of the most tedious jobs in the world. There's more to life than money and it's easy to get a decent paying job with a modicum of intelligence if you're willing to sacrifice job satisfaction. You could become a Waitrose manager for example Laughing

To be fair to him he manages a big branch in Bristol and it actually sounds like a decent job. I know theres more to life than money and I wouldn't be in my current job if I was that motivated by it; my performance is fairly good in a job where time in service means for more to your pay packet than capability Rolling Eyes

A "bonus" is a cunning accounting trick to keep salaries and salary related benefits like pension contributions down to a minimum. The great thing is that you can give your staff a swingeing pay-cut any time you like, blame it on them being slackers, and there's damn-all they can do about it. Neat, huh? Thumbs Up

So are John Lewis Partnership salaries 10 or 15% lower than they should be and just bolstered by the bonus?

No, salaries are determined by the "market rate". A store manager at Tesco's should be paid pretty similarly to a Waitrose one in the same area, with the same sized branch etc.

The bonus is the dividend that would usually go to shareholders. Since JL & Waitrose are a partnership (i.e. the employees own the company) we get the dividend. Wink
