I have been browsing some on this site, so any reccomendations for a good starter? Not too expensive at 100-150 quid.

I plan on killing some mice which are eating my chicken feed! Mouse traps do not seem to be working, and I have seen some of these mice around my shed.

https://www.airguns-online.co.uk/air_rifles.htm

I have been looking at this one and the offer:

It'll probably do.
The laws on power have been tightened several times i think, so buying an old one off ebay will probably be cheaper and better. The gas powered ones are when real exterminators use.

If you could buy any off ebay (you can't).

MinhDinh, the ones you link to are mostly Rusian and Chinese made, i.e mostly crap.

If I were you I'd go for one of the cheaper BSA, Webley or Gamo rifles... They're usually more accurate and won't fall to bits as quickly.

.177 calibre will be fine for rats and mice but if you want to shoot anything bigger I'd suggest a .22. A scope will be handy too, £50 should get you a half decent one.

Local gun (and often fishing tackle) shops are good places for new and second hand guns.

Do you have a website for your recommendations?

I don't live on a farm so nothing big, al though I may have rats around since I am close to a canal.

The main issue, mice are biting their way to my wheat, barley and maize chicken feed!

I sometimes spot them too, but they are so fast!

When I went Macekralmfishing in brighton, I went into a shol and most were 200 quid up to a thousand! LOL.

Have a look on airgunbbs.com for 2nd hand stuff.

Air rifles however are not the best thing for mice... they're small and fast and if you hit them would pretty much explode Twisted Evil Traps (more traps!), poison or a cat might be better.

Good for rats though Wink

Make sure you can hit something the size of a 2p at the range you'll be shooting at before starting hunting.

Could you just move or store the feed better? I'm sure you could shoot a mouse but it's going to be difficult. When I've had mice in the past they're hard enough to see never mind hit with an air rifle.

I used to shoot rabits with my uncles Weihrauch, that thing had some power to it and a posh as fuck scope too.
You can kill most small things with something pretty weak though. I've killed a few large black birds with a BB gun , you've got to hit them in the neck though Laughing

Try buying some real nasty traps and baiting them with peanut butter, always worked for me!

I have 75 kg of chicken feed so they are in their boxes LoL.

Bulk buy and all! So I don't really have a big container unless I buy a bin. The mice can climb up high though, ai keep to food at 1 metre height.

I think I will just set up traps, but sometimes with kids around, I don't wanna risk it, especially since there's a metal bit like a pin that holds the cheese etc... Ouch!

I signed up to the forum. Gotta wait for activation and post 5 times or something for the buy and sell thread.

I don't want to soend too much for something like this. Maybr I could have some fun with it perhaps by shooting gran ma's on the street. Joke! Lol.

A word of advice, don't buy any chinese shite. It will fall apart and/or implode. Unlike bikes there aren't even any OK ones. Stick to a decent spring powered, legal limit rifle from the likes of BSA, Wheirauch and so on. Secondhand Webleys and BSAs are probably your best bet, things like the Lightning, Vulcan and Stingray. You can cleanly kill most things on the general license within airgun range - thats 30 yards for a newbie, 45-50 when you get good - with a scope of no more than x9 power and 12 ftlbs.

If you plan on doing nothing but short range ratting then .22 is better and allows more margin for error. Otherwise .177 has a much flatter trajectory with no real need to adjust your aim between 9 and 25 yards, depending on how your scope is set up. If you have a mate with shotguns then a silenced .410 will be far more effective - if you were closer I would be happy to help!

As mentioned the airgunBBS is a mine of knowledge and great for secondhand bargains.Having said that though I don't recommend participating as it is possibly the most cliquey forum ever and has gone downhill massively - this is from someone with nearly 4000 posts.

Oh and Frosty - killing blackbirds isn't good, or legal for that matter. Unless you meant crows Wink

I've got two but I've never used them.
Bought the wrong pellets, never got round to buying any more.
Really must get that sorted.

The guns you've linked look to be very similar to SMK, which are shockingly bad made, they don't last at all.
As has already been said get yourself a good second hand BSA (lightening would be ideal for you) it'll last years if you look after it right.

That's a load of toss! .177 is absolutely fine for shooting any airgun quarry. They're also better for the longer range shooting, A good .22 is almost useless past 35yds where as a good .177 can effectively kill at 45yds.
I can kill vermin at more of a distance with my .177 than i ever could with my .22's.

Regarding the meeces, have not you not a cat?
Meeces don't like the smell of cat, they go away quicktime, bye bye.

And any that are left: the cat usually gets anyway Smile

+1

Well I slightly disagree with the .22 range bit, my S10 will shoot decent 2p sized groups at 50 yards when rested. It is workable with mildots and a good knowledge of holdover Wink

Having said all that though I will rarely shoot anything at more than 35 with any of my guns except in the best of conditions. Thats what shotguns and mates with rimmies are for Laughing

Good point, but he's new to the game lets not confuse him with mildots and holdover/under Laughing + my .22 was a lightening xl, Trying to shoot a spring at them distances and being accurate is near impossible.
When i was shooting a lot if it wasn't too windy i used to get 45yds-50yd kills regularly (weirauch hw100)

Okay well BSA it looks like, just awaiting my activation and 5 posts or whatever it is to see the buy and sell.

Unless you can PM a screeny of the sales for my needs and price range. Thanks

Don't be a troll over there, even slightly. The moderation there is fairly strict.

Want me to wander over and have a lookout for you?

Personally, i'd suggest poison and traps (I find chocolate works well) - have a word with your local council, you may/should be able to get their pest control chap out to lay some traps for free. Tell them you've got rats rather than mice, not sure if they'll come out for mice.

If you know anyone locally with a small terrier (Jack Russell etc) get them to pop round - terriers are far better at ratting in my opinion and experience. Cats can tend to fuck around and play with mice, terriers just demolish them.

You might consider getting one yourself, once it's usefulness has been outlived, you can cook it up into a tasty meal.

.22 bsa superstar

Hi i have a very nice superstar .22 which has been fully tuned with new sping and seals so should give you years of shooting it is a mk1 and has a custom silencer fitted, the stock is like brand new the action has a few marks on but nothing to bad just me being fussy, it shoots great 2p groups at 35 yards which is good for a 22 springer it also has very little twang, it comes with a old tasco world class 3-9-40 which is crystal clear and sports match mounts i would like £150 or ovno face to face

You won't do better than this. Absolute bargain. Usual score is to add £20 for RMSD.

Buying a pet for it doesn't seem like an honest thing to do, plus they are a commitment, which is why I have decided not to buy an Akita.

Slack, how much are they worth normally? What is RMDS by the way?

The Superstar was a mid range underlever. fairly smooth shooting and quite expensive when they came out. I can't remember but that one might even be a 10-shot magazine fed jobbie. The scope is reasonable enough on it too. Searching through old ads and searching for 'first' or 'starter' springers in general airgun might be a good idea too.

RMSD = Royal Mail Special Delivery Wink

What area is he from?

It does say OVNO, so would an offer of 150 be acceptable if that included delivery?

If there are any cheaper alternatives that are still pretty good, please let me know. However this one is noted.

RMSD, ah. Very Happy

Perfectly legal to shoot within 50 feet of a public highway... so long as you don't shoot people!

"It is an offence to fire an airgun within 50 feet of the centre of a public highway, If by doing so you cause any member of the public using that highway to be injured, interrupted or endangered. This applies even if you are on private property adjacent the highway. Public highways include roads, bridleways and public footpaths. "

Keep it sensible, try and shoot from somewhere with a bit of cover between you and the road, you'll have no problems.

Also note, it's illegal to let a pellet leave the property you have persmission to shoot on. So long as you do this, it's very unlikely any member of the public would have any cause for complaint.
