Right just a quick question about insurance.

I've got to pick up this 50cc bike for my brother this week, I rung up my insurance company and they said I've got 3rd party cover on other bikes with the owners permission.

So can I just ride this home or does my brother need to have insurance on the bike for it to be valid?

Cheers

There needs to be insurance in place on the bike in the first place before you can ride it legally.
You could ask the owner to keep his insurance running until you get home if you're buying it from someone privately.

Thanks, I had a feeling that'd be the case. It's from a dealer unfortunately. So I think I'll just get my brother to take out a policy and do it that way.

Hi

Difficult to say. Your policy might not specify it. But if you stop riding it (such as getting off to fill with petrol) then it is then an uninsured vehicle on the public highway.

However under the road traffic act (section 144a) for the insurance to be valid for keeping a vehicle it either must specify the registration number or be for a vehicle you own.

All the best

Keith

Another interesting question

If I wanted to insure a car that isn't in my name and then add the named driver who's car it actually is would this be allowed or will insurance say no?

The insurance company I work for requires you to be the owner/registered keeper. Suspect others to generally be the same.

Admiral allow this as I'm down as the main driver and my dad is a named driver whilst he is also the owner of the car.

That's good. So who's NCD are you using? Are you managing to build up your own that you can use elsewhere?

I'm using and building up my own no claims on the car which I can go on to use elsewhere. Any no claims discount earned by my dad on this policy cannot be used elsewhere though.

Pretty much what I want to do but have myself as the main driver and the owner as a named driver
