How do kiddies

Right, well.

I bought a Toyota Hilux a week or two back to sell on, paid £1500.

Got it on ebay:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160558125076&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT

Someone came to see it last weekend and he rang this evening, offering £2050, wants to know tomorrow.

It has only been on Ebay 3 days, and has gone from 99p to £1600, still has a week left.

Do I take the money and profit, or risk it for a biscuit and stick with ebay.

It's hard to judge what it's worth, better nick than many and FSH, the prices on others are also all over the bloody shop.

What would you do?!

Take the money, don't pay ebay fees. You might get less for it if you leave the auction to run.

{edit} If you don't mention the mileage in the auction, how do you expect it to sell? {edit}

"Currently on 96,000 miles, with MOT and Tax until August 2011. "

?

The fees will roughly work out at £40 I think, already paid £8 to list it.

I missed that bit.

Someone will pay £2k for an L reg Toyota with almost 100,000 miles on it? Jay-zus! There are a lot of fucking idiots out there, and Top Gear has a lot to answer for!

A good start might be to get someone else to bid £2050 on it.

If it goes up to or near that already, then you can expect more.

Depends how much you want the money and of course what you can do with it in the mean time - find another one to buy and sell in 3 days again Smile.

Check completed listing prices for similar items if yo haven't done so.

The opposite, I'd say.

If someone has made a bid for more than the amount the other bloke is offering, I'd say they deserve to have the chance to buy it.
As someone is genuinely willing to pay that much for it, it's working as it would on ebay if the person had bid what they were willing to pay for it on there.

Totally get what you're saying but I just think if someone can get a bargain then they deserve the chance, as in the OP got something cheap enough to re-list and sell on.

Fully understand that everyone wants top dollar and will do most things for it, just also thought it's a bit naughty.

Great minds G. It was on £1550, just wanted to see if that person had put a nice high bid in, in which case I wouldn't have to worry too much about selling early.

Think I'll take the £2050, the prices on the rest are just all over the bloody place, may as well take the profit.

I suppose it is a lot for an old truck, they're reliable and provide many with a source of income. On top of that, there is a huge export market keeping prices high.

Cheers guys.

I'd be a bit annoyed if I'd put a bid in on something, for the seller to sell it someone for less.

In the past I have stated in my auctions that it's listed for sale outside ebay and that I would do the above, so get your max bid in early and you won't lose it if someone comes along offering 'buy it now' for less. However, it just confuses more than it helps explaining that.

Again I know what you mean, but getting a mate to ramp it up is making someone pay more than they would have regardless of maximum bids.

Just not really "in the spirit" of ebay in my eyes.

Chances are it would end up that high anyway - as it is, it's made no difference to anyone.

If someone's willing to pay that much for it, they think it's worth that so shouldn't be too annoyed. I know where you're coming from, but I am an utter bastard anyway.

Is that not shell bidding? and against ebay rules and maybe illegal? and yes its a bad thing to do to someone. Take the offer you have got and dont pay the fees, you have made a fair profit for not much work, be happy with a clear head. Is it worth the bad karma, remember you reap what you sow.

Don't get me wrong I don't actually care, I don't use ebay anymore as its full of nuisances, mess abouts, dodgy feedbackers, scammers and people who ramp the bids up.

Of course, if my friend were to win the auction, he would pay for the truck and cherish it Wink

Some of the things I've done in my lifetime have no doubt planted me firmly in hell, something like this wouldn't make much difference Laughing

Putting 'advertised outside ebay' with the intention of ebay users giving you an offer outside the auction is also against the rules and may be illegal.
Who exactly is it 'bad' for, to bid up an auction to a price you HAVE been offered?
The bidder has their bid raised to a price that another person is willing to pay. That'd be how an auction works.
The person making the offer doesn't get the item if someone else is willing to pay more. Yep, also how an auction works Wink.

Except for the fact that if you had a mate doing it for you at an actual auction he'd have to buy it for his bid if he was top bidder.

Its not like ebay where the mate "buys" it and leaves all the feedback etc.

Never happen in this case though.

If the current bid is over your offer price - it's basically the same as the person making the offer bidding, the new bidder pushes the price up to just above what they're willing to pay.

If the current bid is under your offer price - you sell to the person making the offer and cancel the auction.

It's illegal to get friend's to bid to drive others to bid more.

That is just how ebay is, and some companies have been caught out and I believe closed down.

I would take the money, if it is guranteed.

Sold £2050

Leaving it on Ebay pending collection.

Edit: Now I have to decide whether to take £6500 from a dealership for my focus ST or hold out and put it up on the private market. Rolling Eyes
