Ran over a rabbit today Crying or Very sad In church road under the M4 flyover in s wales.

Went back after initial hit and put him in the gutter facing the hedge.

Poor little thing was crying. Crying or Very sad No blood, but diagnosis is sever organ traumatisation and broken what nots.

I left him because I didn't know what else to do, I didn't think about breaking his neck.

Coming back home from University after an hour and the thing was dead.

Day before that almost ran over a stray bulldog Shocked

Ah well.

Just a quick question, why he have no eyes when i saw him later? Laughing

i hit a dog a number of years back, sickening feeling, went back it was wimpering, took it to a local police station not more than 500yards back, they didn't want to know.

by that time it had died.

when i picked it up i could feel the spin was snapped Sad all the police wanted to know was whether i wanted to leave my details so if the owner got in touch i could sue them.

as a pet owner i told them to get lost.

dogs foxes and badgers i would be a bit more sypathetic,

i found a dog in a car park which had been run over very obviously in a bad way i went over to see what i could do it managed to get up and jumped in my car!!!!

so i took it round a mates house as i have 2 staff-crosses and did not want to distress him any more, rang the vets but as it was 11 ish at nite they could do nothing so we made a makeshift bed with a large box and some blankets, gave it some water and food and i sat with his head on my lap stroking him till he died so he was not on his own. buryed him next morning up at some old garages oposite my mates house.

ive always been tempted to dig his remains up to see what the damage was curiosity an all. this was about 3 years ago now if not longer. just dont want to see a partly decayed dog.

I've never hit anything, to my knowledge. I'd come off before I'd run something over (and have done in the past - once spectacularly into a field). Had numerous near misses, including one with a deer once and I still don't know how I missed it.

I have almost come off due to pheasants many times. They just don't move until you touch them and if you try to go past them they fly towards you.

I hit a pigeon head on into my headlight

I hit a pigeon on my chest.

I ran over a hedgehog

I ran over a rabbit.

Never come off because of any of them although the pigeon to the chest winded me, even at 30mph.

I haven't been riding long. And I normally stay close to home. But commuting to uni via farm lanes this is my first. As funny as it sounds, yesterday a pheasent almost hit me head height. That would not be funny Laughing

For anyone reading this, the OP really should have finished the rabbit off there and then. Poor bastard of a rabbit left to die while "crying". Sad

I once hit a deer in a farm truck, fun trying to break its neck while it's thrashing about everywhere!

Was rather nice to eat though Wink

If you're going around hitting things, clearly your reflexes and general ability aren't up to scratch. Joey Dunlop once said that and I agree with yer man 100%.

I am a fan of Joey Dunlop and I have a lot of respect for him so I'm trying to put this in the nicest possible way.

He hit a tree.

As said above, one minute he was beside the road some 5 yards to the left minding his own business. I thought, great just a little bunny-the joy of the countryside, then as soon as I thought I had passed it, I was already riding over him. Nothing I could do- one minute he was in the side of the road, the next I couldn't see him as he was already under my wheel. Rolling Eyes

And besides, you can get in alot more trouble swerving.

For the other who said break his neck- I didn't think of it, and even if I did I probably couldn't do it. As for those who take it home for dinner- I might have if my mum was home, but it would have been going to be in my backpack with all my uniwork. I can just think now about sitting in a lecture with a dead rabbit in my bag. Shocked

So why have I never killed anything in 26 years? I must be having a pretty incredible run of luck. What happens if a young kid suddenly runs 'out of nowhere'?

Joey did indeed hit a tree. But he didn't kill anything except himself and I'm pretty sure I remember that his crash wasn't his fault.

To be fair, a kid on the side of the road you can see instantly and slow down for. And you know everything is alright when you safely cruise past him. But animals such as rabbits are only 4 inches heigh. You're going along, you see a rabbit, you make room, and then he suddenly disapears- then, when you're just a yard behind him but 5 yards besides him, he darts for the other side of the road, before you have any time to react, you're already bouncing.

If I am in the car rabbits I don't slow or move for, they are vermin, you should have gone back and confirmed the kill.

Badgers and foxes will mess you and your car up something rotten if you hit them, my best advice here is to get yourself a SGC and some AAA shot, pull over and try and shoot the badger or fox in the face then kick it to the side of the road or chuck it in a bin.

Anything else make an effort to move out the way if I can, unless they are like the above 3 and are vermin.

You see a kid standing by the side of the road. But what about when one appears from between parked cars? Or runs off the pavement into the road for no reason?

If you're somewhere with hedgerows beside you, it's a pretty fair guess that something could suddenly appear. IMHO, it's fairly straightforward to ride in such a way that minimises the chance of running anything over. Maybe if I lived out in the sticks it would be different and I'd be saying, yeah, it's impossible not to kill animals. But I've had numerous foxes, rabbits, birds, deer and one badger play chicken with me and avoided them thus far.

Yesterday I came probably closer than I ever have to hitting something living when some gobshite French student inexplicable ran straight in front of me. If I'd been on the Bandit, we'd probably both be in traction now. Fortunately I was on the RXS and managed miss him by about an inch.

Always expect the unexpected, particularly from the bloody French
Shocked Laughing

Re Rob - that's one of the reasons I've ridden the RXS more than any other bike I've had. It's small and slow - you're only really a risk to yourself on one Laughing

I hit a deer recently in the car. It was one of those mudflap/muntjack things. I was doing 60ish and it ran out infront of me. Ive been told not to brake for deer, so i didnt, only let off the throttle. Apparently when you brake hard, the front of the car dips down and theres more chance itll come through the windscreen. Smashed my number plate, both foglights and shoved the bumper on the skew, warped the bonnet, tore the rear-most backbox off and the spare wheel tray. It got up and tried to limp off (It had at leat 1 broken leg, liquid pouring from its mouth and it was making a squeeky screaming noise) Someone about 4 cars back with a landy who was obviously one of the landholders / estate workmen, shot it. It looked too small and too mullered to eat Crying or Very sad
