I am 19 and my licence de-restricts on 1st of April !! I really like the ER-6f, but wan to buy one ASAP without a test ride, because they are selling like hot cakes.... :-S

As I am 6 ft, will I be too tall and cramped with this bike?? Also will I get bored of it quickly as I have only upgraded from a 350cc ??

I'm only little, but my 6'4 mate rode mine with no issues.

As for boredom, why does everyone think they're VR46? The bike'll do 135mph, more than fast enough for any road in the UK... what are you thinking of doing with it?

Don't buy it without a test ride as that's the only way you are going to know how you like the way it rides, feels etc.

See if you can get yourself a test ride booked for the 1st and don't panic about how fast they are selling because the last thing you want to do ride the bike off the forecourt and decide you don't like it and instantly loose about £750 in the process.

Good things come to those who wait Thumbs Up

I have an er6f, my partner is 6ft and doesn't fell cramped on it.

As for getting bored of it, I had a 04 z750 which I sold to fund a car. Once I had the money to buy another bike I wanted a z750 again but I came across a really cheap er6 on ebay, put a bid on it and ended up winning it and I now prefer the er6 to the z750, it lacks the power of the zed but its so light and fun. It the states it is sold as a Ninja650r and if you search you will find lots of forums which my be helpful ?

I took my test on one and I'm 5'11 and it felt good.
But do go for a test ride, as it'll be hard to go back once you got it.

I have to say though.... you get your full licence on 1st April... as in Aprils fools day Very Happy

135 is legally far too much for the road but the total figure doesnt tell the story of how it gets there! Power and acceleration can be a big part of biking for many. To enjoy the outright grunt of a bike you don't need to be 'VR46' do you? Wink

Top speed means absolutely nothing when it comes to enjoyment or fun.

Ever ridden a supermoto?

Can't vouch for height as i'm 5'8" and it's fine for me.

But it's a great bike, for sweeping country roads.

Like the poster above, I also have a Z750 (which is faster), but you rarely if ever need that power on the road, the ER6 is really fun to throw in to corners and needs no mods from the start.

Ohh I went out on a 89 mile ride out on Sunday on my ER6, it used 6.52 litres of petrol ~ 62 mpg. Believe me with today's fuel prices that's good. ( I wasn't riding like a fanxy either).

A) not really and B) that presumes that top speed alone is what makes a bike exciting.

I got bored of a power bike tuned zx9 pretty quickly.
A lot quicker than I 'got bored with' my zx6. But then I did make relatively decent use of the power the zx6 had and having a bit more doesn't mean faster, just the same fast for longer.
Now I prefer little bikes for fun, but like big bikes for ease of use for daily stuff (going to the shops etc, that's why I replaced aforementioned zx9 with a GSXR 1000 Wink.)

Oh and get a cheap SV650, much better deal than a fairly new ER to my mind for a pretty similar bike.

+1

I've seen a mint, four year old ER6F, with 4,000 miles on the clock go for £1950 on eBay. They're not worth the new asking price in the slightest.

Not really comparable considering the recent price rises due to fuel and VAT.

When I got mine new 2 years ago they were £4800 reduced to £4000. Now with higher delivery costs and duties they are considerably more expensive as new bikes yet still have 0% finance.

I am not buying new, but the new model came in 2009 with loads of new features (less engine vibration on long journeys etc...)

I would like a £3000'ish bike and one that I can run around Europe on in Summer ! Cool I agree that it will take me a while to get bored, but I will definitely keep it for 3 years until I pass out of Sandhurst...

THEN I'll play with the big boys Very Happy Insurance is the main think keeping me on the ER-6f as they only insure me with a cat 1. Crying or Very sad

Cheers for all the replies!!

How does the bike know it's doing a long journey and to vibrate less?

Likes : performance is quite swift with 0-60 times just under 4s from
magazine tests, just not as fast as a sports bike, but that's to be
expected! good looks (this is in eye of beholder), reliable : never let
me down in 18k miles, quite cheap to buy new or secondhand

Dislikes : Rusts quite easily (put ACF50 on metal parts before
going near a salty road). Uncomfortable seat on journeys greater
than 30 miles : my Triumph sprint is a lot better in this regard. If
you do buy an ER6 and tour on it you might need to get an
airhawk or similar. I'm 6ft tall by the way if this helps.

Oh and I had a 2007 model and had little to no vibration (even on a
long tour round France Wink so don't let this put you off buying the older
model..

As others have said, try to try before you buy as it could be it
doesn't suit.

Martin

It'll be more than fast enough for any barely experienced 19 year old.

I'd definitely go for it over a dull as dishwater, poorly finished SV any day.

They are kind of fun bikes, If you are not used to sports 600+ they will be fast enough for you, a bit gutless at the top end, but are also little wheelie machines, just chop the power off and on in first and up it comes Razz

Beware of budget suspension, will fling you into a hedge if you forget its a budget commuter ish machine and not a race bike...

I have had no issues with mine in 19000 miles from new in the last nearly 2 years. Vibration has not been an issue, maintenance is simple, it looks ok to me, it was not expensive to buy. A good little bike.

But I will be changing it soon for something different just for contrast.

Same here, but over 4 years.

I might consider changing it, but it's easily the best commuter I've ever had and I think even if I do get a bigger tourer for long distance, I'll be keeping it to go to work on.

I've bought an ER6F (picking it up sat) I'm only 5.9" and i'm getting my feet flat on the deck so I'd guess the extra few inches wouldn't make much difference.

From the reviews I read (and i read them all) I never read of anyone feeling cramped. Also all the reviews point to it being a fantastic bike thats can be forgiving to new riders (me) but also very good fun for those who know how to push it harder.

As for buying new or second hand, I've gone for new for these reasons......I wanted a new or new ish bike, the ER6F nearly new second hand go for around the 4-4.5 grand mark.. i found lots of un-registered 2009 and 2010 models for 5 grand ish...i paid 5377 for mine as its a candy green 2010 and they are like hens teeth now. the dealer had a 2009 blue for 4999...not forgetting these are unregistered with no miles so in effect are the same as buying a 2011 model but cheaper.

My thinking was that new was good value over nearly new and you know what your getting. You only have to look on here to read what some people think of running in a bike. I didn't want to buy a bike someone had thrashed from day one.

I have the older style model (2006) but the new models are much better looking in my opinion so I am guessing that is one of the main reasons you want a new or newish one?
