I've not got any experience of them but be aware how far down that goes, it's meant to protect your coccyx, which is great but probably a bit of a pain for anything other than track day use.

I was considering the Knox Fastback as it's styled towards everyday commuting.

Had a knox fastback and rate it highly. The reason why I DON'T have it is because I retrofitted an alpinestars Tech Race! See pic below

https://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/182906_10150152669180712_500990711_8125305_7228499_n.jpg

Check what CE Certification the armour is... not that it matters much in terms of comfort (it just refers to the standards regarding maximum transmitted energy).

I'd pay more for a comfortable back protector.

Tech Race came with my MX-1 suit, so all i needed was a vest to keep it snugly in place rather than relying on the buttons to snap it onto the suit.

I've Had a T Pro for twenty years......
I cant say how good it is, THANKFULLY I have never had to call upon it to serve its purpose........
Practically its an old design, and its not as convenient or easy to put on as a vest type, and unless your in the facer crouch, I always found it tugged my leathers or dug into my ribs.
For the road, I found an MX kidney belt a lot comfier providing a bit of back protection, but also back support, so actually making it comfier in the saddle on a linger run.
Ultimately..... thoise twenty years NOT calling in teh spiney.... basically tell me I'm much better off relying on comfort and controll and good riding to keep me safe than any bit of tersiary protection to save me a bit of hurt when its all too late and I AM gonna get hurt!

Leathers have got the race hump on the back, which doubles up as a back protector as it runs right down to my pelvis.

When im riding MX, I've got a Dainese bionic suite type top. Which has shoulder, elbow and chest protection.
Along with a back protector.

Wouldnt ride without one or the other.

I currently believe in minimising faff whilst maintaining all the gear all the time, as i use my bike for everything, and as such the spine protecting vests you have to put on and adjust as well just aren't practical (i've got one, Oxford Max i believe, and it's great while i used it for all of a few months, but it's yet something else to have to do before i could even set off so i now don't use it). I use a CE level 1 approved foam insert in my jacket instead as it's no extra faff at all, and provides some protection. Seems pointless having no spine protection when there's no extra faff to have the insert in!

If i was track riding or just going out for a sunday hoon, i'd probably take the time to use the Oxford Max instead, as it's CE level 2 and quite clearly covers more of my back (i kinda wish i could get a bigger foam insert in my jacket, something protecting more of the length of my spine - take note manufacturers!)

I'll be sure ask my lecturers about back protectors at some point (and report back, ofc) - the spinal cord is a very major part of my degree and so i assume they'll have some relevant knowledge.

I've used Knox foam type back protectors for a lot of years on track and the road. I've never even had a scratch or back injury despite binning it more times than I care to remember.
The only time I was aware it had saved me was at Cadwell, Charlies in at about 100 when I went down and slid along the track and over the grass for some distance. The grass has lots of small sharp stones in it and they shredded parts of my leathers but didn't get through the protector.
Glad I was wearing it when I did have accidents though, never know what it saved. Better to have one than be laid in hospital thinking "I wonder if it would have been this bad if I was wearing one"

Uh.... can you expand on that?

I'm finding it hard to imagine what sort of circumstances those would be. Confused

Well, he explained that hard back protectors were absolutely fine on track where there was nothing to hit, but he discovered that impacts with kerbs or other road furniture could cause the top of the protector to be jammed into the vertebrae in the neck and cause spinal damage. A 'soft' back protector would not do this. I think it is also possible for the bottom of the protector to jam into the lower spine, but I'm not sure if he had any evidence of injury for this.

Saved one of my mates on his zzr1400. Still had a burst kidney but swore if it wasn't for his back protector he would have broken alot more.

So I always wear my knox, without fail.

I've got a Knox Gilet Air that I bought after someone on here recommended it in a thread. It's comfy and comes with a chest plate which I tend to wear because it's there, no dramas. Cheap now too (discontinued), think I paid about £120 for mine: https://store.planet-knox.com/knox/upper-body/109/discontinued-price-reduced-gilet-air/

I've got an older Knox Contour, but may get a forcefield one at some point, as though the Knox is confortable it's a bit of a faff getting it on / off.

The race hump is for aerodynamics when you're tucked in, I've read in several places that race humps are not back protectors and can make things worse in the event of an accident.

I've got a race hump on my track day 1 piece and it feels a lot flimsier than the proper back protector.

I have a Dainese Wave 12.

Snug fit, the joints seem to contour well to my back despite the plastic actually being quite hard. Took a Knox foam jobby out of my jacket, now wear this instead.

P.S. That is not me Thumbs Up .

I think I need to get one.

Out of my jackets, only my A*s RC-1 has any kidney/back protection at all.

Something like this looks good with both front and back protection

https://www.alpinestars.com/Track_Protection_Vest/pd/c/170/np/170/p/650848.html

While on the subject does anyone wear something similar to this https://www.alpinestars.com/Bionic_2_Protection_Jacket/pd/c/170/np/170/p/650658.html in the summer with just a hoody on top or something? I'm guessing it would give any abrasion resistance though

I have just got one of these:

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/RST-Contour-Plus-Back-Protector-Peak-/180525338356?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Protective_Clothing&hash=item2a08260ef4#ht_606wt_905

Honestly can't complain. It is sooo comfy. Its like its not even there. Its practical too. Just slips in the leathers without any problems at all.

No idea what sort of protection it offers. It is better than nothing for sure, but not as good as the £120 ones.

Father was down the charity shop today and grabbed me this:

https://www.lsra.info/skisale/adpics/4ce03d1ee92a24141ee16d28c.jpg
(not my photo)

It is hard and covers my back but like someone has said is it moe bad than good? Should I just not wear it? He got it for £3 cos the woman didnt know what it was Laughing

It is one solid piece of plastic though and doesnt really flex too much. A little bit when leaning forwards but nothing major. Quite comfy.

So what you think? Wear it as it is better than foam in my jacket or just buy a decent one when I can afford it?

Thumbs Up

EDIT: Just seen on gbbikers that Paxo bought one before?
Also, the brand is B-Square? (Lidl's own?)

I have a foam insert in my jacket that protected me well.

A car cut across my path and I somersaulted over the car bonnet landing flat on my back. The back of my helmet showed some serious abrasion.

It was fairly slow stuff, but I reckon if I had done the same without a foam insert in my jacket, I wouldnt have gotten up so easily. As it was, I was just a bit shaken.

I've got a dainese hard one that you have to strap on, and I dont think it would give much better protection. I prefer something with more bounce to it than stiff as a board. You want something to cushion in the impact. The hard shell my spread the impact but doesnt do much to cushion.

A few years ago Ride did tests and discovered that a cheese sandwich was better than some back protectors.

I've ordered the Alpinestars 'upgrade' RC back protector which replaces the foam one in the jacket. It's hard but soft Laughing Not hard like the plasticy ones but hard enough. I also ordered the bionic chest inserts, all for £50 which isn't bad and the fact it all goes into my jacket means I don't need any extra stuff to carry around!
