INB4MIKE

Lessons are not necessary for an A2. You can learn during a test, but you can't pass during a lesson. Re-sitting the tests a couple of times will work out cheaper than paying an instructor, plus you'll have the satisfaction of thumbing your nose at Teflon-Mike. Wink

You could try to familiarise yourself with the roads near the test centre though. Look out for things like unmarked or unclear junctions and complex roundabouts; they'll try to throw something like that at you.

You can cancel a test for a full refund with 3 full working days notice, so if you can be available at short notice, keep an eye on the booking site and see if you can nab a cancellation. I passed Mod 1, rode home, and bagged a booking for Mod 2 the next morning. Thumbs Up

As Rogerborg said you can do the A2 without lessons but if you want to do the DAS then you should take lessons and use the schools (or a mate's) bike for the tests.

I got a bike after my CBT then rode around for a fair while when I felt ready I booked two days of lessons for the Mod1/2 to tidy up any bad habits and used them to get a Mod1 test date - that only cost a couple of hundred quid. I rode to the centre by myself, met my instructor there with the other students, took my test, passed then checked with the school for a Mod2 date but couldn't wait and booked my Mod2 for the following Friday (1 week later) took it and passed. If you feel confident then just keep checking the DVLA website and ride around near where they do the tests to check speed limits, one way systems etc.

For the Mod1 you need to be able to reach the speed for the swerve and emergency stop and do a u-turn, figure of 8, slalom... For the Mod 2 - road positioning, life savers, rear obs, speed limits....

Over to Teflon-Mike and good luck.....

Yep, I did mine all on my own. Passed mod1 2nd time, mod2 1st time.

Sure it was cheaper, and technically i'm a fully fledged rider- but still on a 125 Embarassed

At the moment I am in a prediciment deciding whether to restrict a bike or buy otherwise. If you can do DAS, do it!

Hey Blurredman, don't knock your poor 125 it's getting you out and about. I know it's not the best trying to hit speed on a 70mph road but for now for me it'll do. I can do 50-60 quite comfortably on the A roads so for now I bypass the motorways.

Like you I've been looking at bikes and wondering whether to 'trade up' or not but will probably wait till my restriction is over - 18 months and counting... That said I'll probably change my mind again when the sun finally comes out for longer than 2 minutes Laughing

This was my bible for MOD1:

Practice all this (including left swerve and emergency breaking) and once you're ok with it - yo are good to go Smile

It's very true that. I avoid motorways and go on a and b roads. But getting up hills is somewhat tiresome at 35 to 45mph Laughing Besides that- my bike isn't being traded because my brother needs it for his mod2. But i figure that if i keep it until June I get my 1year ncd etc and insurance is cheaper for the next bike. But I always get hammered on insurance (I paid £300 TPO on my CG last June).

Luckily we don't have that many steep hills around here and the ones locally restrict you to 30mph anyway.

I also found that my insurance didn't go down by that much even though I passed my test just before renewal and I'm a lot older than you although the rear bump I got that and had to declare last year even though no claim was made might have had something to do with it ..... Evil or Very Mad

Seeing as your brother will be using your bike you may as well get a bigger bike and split the cost between you so that you both then have the use of two bikes instead of fighting over who gets to use the one bike.....

Oops sorry Gazza M just hijacked your thread Embarassed
