Hey guys;

Me and a few mates have booked up to go to Amsterdam in a weeks time. We're all students around 20's. I for one havent been out of the country in about 8 years so im so excited to get away.

Im just looking for general places to go, places not to go, people's experiences etc etc.

We're only going for 3 days so not going to have time to do everything I could ever want! Thumbs Up

Come out of the train station, turn left.

Been a long time for me, probably 13 years or so. Was lucky as we had a dutch friend and crashed at his house and he showed us where to go.

But from what I remember come out of the train station and turn left.

Oh, don't tread in the stinking massive pile of human shit curled up in the corner of the station stairwell with a piece of tissue stuck in the top....or at least I assume thats a permanent feature.

If you can get out of the dam, away from the yanks and tourist prices there are some good places to go.

Although if you plan on getting wasted and wrecked, easier to stay close to the centre.

depends what you want to do

be warned Amsterdam is expensive these days €4 - 5 for a beer
weed & hash is about €8 - 25 a gram
decent meal € 20+

you can do a canal tour for about €5
Brewery tours, museum tours etc range in price

Heineken Brewery tour.

Free and you can drink as much as you like as you go around.

Well you used to be able to , best check before turning up because it's been a while since I went.

think they charge now but if I can remember right its reasonable and you get 3 free beers
so even if its €15 its worth it as you'll pay that in a bar for the same beer

As Pinky Snr said. Depends what you want to do. Amsterdam has something for everyone and its normally in excess!

If you like architecture then theres a whole load of beautiful buildings dotted around Amsterdam. Touristy things then head along the main street straight out of the station and you have Dam square and Madame Tussards. Not far from there to the right is Anne Franks house. The far side of the square takes you to the house of horrors. Great fun.

Typical hotspots are of course the coffee shops. Tourists tend to flock to places like the Grasshopper and Bulldog. Way too touristy. If you want a nice one then find Hill St Blues. Its next door to the police station and has writing all over the walls. Its dark, dingy and cheap but very friendly. I used to spend many strange evenings there.

Of course the Red Light District is popular and thats over towards the left. Not too far away from Hill ST Blues oddly enough. The Hemp Museum is at the top end of the RLD. Sex Museum you'll pass on the way down the main street.

Top tips though: Keep your money safe. Wallet out of sight, never buy from street dealers and its not recomended walking around alone at night. Amsterdam is a weird place and for a first time experience its full of wonders and madness. All the stories you hear about the place are true. Its only when you've been there a few times you realise how dangerous the place can really be and how seedy it is.

If you're there for a few days I'd recomend getting on the train and going to the next big city. Haarlem. Its a stunning city that has everything Amsterdam has only cheaper and without the tourists and street dealers on every corner.

Also awful weed, over-priced, too busy, and commercial.

Google the good coffee shop guides and find the maps. There are som fantastic coffee shops off the beaten tracks. I've not been in 4 years now, but went for 7 years on the trot, and unsure of the changes made due to the EU law over the last few years. But if the locals are using it, and theres no many tourists, chances are its a better coffeshop.

Havent been to Amsterdam for about 4 years or so and HSB was fine last time I was there. Although I must admit I onky had a pint there and a smoke. I didnt stay longer than a reminising smoke. I was all by my onesies and had a meeting with a friend planned in the Floyd Coffee shop on the other side of town.

If Haarlem has become really touristy then its been in the last 10 years or so as last time I was there it was full of Dutch people. Still a beautiful place though and a few places I found in Haarlem that were decent were One love, High times and Willy Wurtels.

I wasnt all that impressed with the floyd coffee shop (shock horror). Just a few floyd esq pictures on the walls and the odd floyd track played although their green stuff called umaguma was the dogs nuts.

Hunters is cool Thumbs Up
Hill street is usually full of american teenagers who can be cool as fuck, or god damn annoying. I only usually go in there to play pool. But usually i'll head to a places called Smokey's for pool.

My favourite place is still Barneys. There's the coffee shop that does nice hash, then over the road there's the breakfast bar that serves alcohol & lets you smoke. Splif & a champagne breakfast, fucking spot on.

People always get these confused, don't. Grasshopper = Shit. Greenhouse = nice. Bulldog = aweful.
