There's a simple test. Read any of Warped's posts, and if you feel like you understood it, and that you're still sane... you're not. If you feel a bit off kilter and that it didn't make any sense, you're OK. Thumbs Up Smile

Well it's a pretty broad condition.

Are you hearing voices? Having suicidal thoughts? Seeing things that probably aren't really there? Paranoid delusions? Etc etc.

If the answer is yes, then probably best to go to the docs.

Yes you can be fully aware that you're schizo, used to have a good mate who was full on paranoid schizophrenic with a drug list longer than my arm and was aware of it. I say he was aware of it, he was aware when he wasn't having "an episode", at which point any relation to consensus reality was right out the window, and he had that funny look in his eye....

Not necessarily mate, people with mental health problems often have insight into those problems. I met an interesting lady not so long ago with schizophrenia who was hearing voices constantly but knew that they were part of illness and dealt with them appropriately.

If however people are in crisis then usually the symptoms take over and they can't rationalise them.

There are may reasons for being 'insane' or 'mental' each with different symptoms and causes... If your worried your acting out of character and under a lot of stress, toddle down to your GP for a chat.. Thumbs Up

Watch or read "The Phantom Tollbooth" and you'll understand Laughing

As to the question - like others have said, "mental" is a pretty big umbrella.

Just a small thing, and going for some of the other miserable nutters...

One cheap thing to check out is vitamin B if you're drinking heavily. I only know cos it happened to me... and christ did I go loopy for a bit. Does take about a year of dedicated drinking (well, in my case about 8 months of a bottle of whisky a day... Thai people Laughing)

So by that conclusion I should see a shrink...

In my 31 years on this Earth, during at least 20 of them I've occasionally heard voices and music that aren't/weren't there, I can be in the middle of a field and I will hear someone say my name as though they've said it right in my ear, I also hear bagpipes ( yes, bagpipes ) as though I were in a room with them...

I also see animals and people, not just out the corner of my eye, they are more just coming into my field of vision, but when I move my eyes to focus on them there's nothing there, but I can tell you whether it was a dog or a cat or roughly what clothes the people were wearing...

I also get the kind of ' stare ' that worries people, well people that don't know me enough to know of it, I'm told I can go from calm to insane like a light switch being flicked and sometimes it can be over the most smallest of things, I sometimes go ' into ' myself, I can be sat talking to a group of friends and I'll suddenly turn inwards and just sort of mong, I can either be talking to myself in my head or just sort of switch off, untill someone mentions it I'm not aware of it but when I am I know I've just done it/been like it...

This one has only happened a few times but I've been working with someone and say there's been a hammer next to me, I have a vivid image flash through my mind of me smashing them round the head with it, or pliers and again, the vivid image of me ripping parts off of them with the pliers...

These feelings/events are few and far between these days but I do still have them, the ' turning inward ' happens on a regular basis though, I feel the older I get the more anti-social I get too, I can be sat with a group of people and just suddenly have enough, get up and go somewhere else, I did it last weekend during the clubs rally, a mate had to explain to a few lads from another club that I just go like it at times, apparently I was doing the ' staring ' thing and I was worrying a few of the lads that don't really know me, I stood up said ' fuck it ' necked my pint and went to bed...

This is the most I've ever talked about it to anyone other than the Missus, it took her a long while to get her head round it and get used to me, even after eleven years I don't she has fully, but she knows when to leave me alone and let me get on with it, I can have an ' episode ' and be right as rain as though nothing's happened moments later...

I have an Uncle that's the same, me, the Missus, Uncle and Aunt all used to go out drinking regularly on a weekend but I had to knock it on the head as if he had an ' episode ' I'd have one on the back of him having one and people that didn't know any different would try and get involved and the place would go right up so I stopped going out with them as it was bound to end up going somewhere none of us wanted to be...

Apparently my Grandad was the same too, my Uncles Dad, and a few cousins have been similar to it...

I've sat here for ten minutes deliberating whether or not to post this as like I say only the Missus knows this much about the inner workings of my mind...

Judge me all you want but these are ' episodes ' and not the full me, people that know me take it in their stride, after all, they explain to others that ' That's just the way Ad is ' and leave it at that, you make your own mind up as to whether you want to get to know me any further, if not then that's fine, I wouldn't want you around me anyway...

It may sound worse than it is due to you only seeing this/that part of me, when you see me as a whole it really is a little part of me, I think...

It's been a long while since I've ' lost it '...I've found ways that work for me to deal with it, they work 9/10, but like I say it's been a long while since that 1% has kicked in and I for one don't want it to.

Depends on the situation, you can have a complete and full understanding of you're mental health and it's triggers (That's what recovery services try to explain)

But it's also relative to the situation, you might have a huge workload at the office, then you're transport breaks down, 100 m up you're road, trains aren't working because of weather, then youre manager takes you off the case because you can't make it in to work, and is then reluctant to give you another job until you've sorted the transport out and are more reliable... All this makes you increadibly stressed, which can then lead to hearing voices and thoughts of paranoia because everything is out to get you.

When chances are, unless some bastard fucked ya bike/car up chances are you're shit out of luck

But basically mental health is unique to each person, someone may have good insight to there mental health and someone else may not.

When people get to know me and what starts it, or at least when it's started to leave me well alone and to stop asking if I'm alright and is there anything they can do and just leave me well alone we'll get on fine...

You can always guarantee though that if it happens in a pub someones always a fucking expert, that tends to wind me up all the more tbh, leave me the fuck alone and I'll be fine in a few minutes or so, normally...

If the Missus or a female mate is with me when it kicks in they'll sit next to me and stroke my head, the only bloke that's ever gotten away with it is a mate I haven't seen for a while who's around 6' 4" and is built like a shithouse door, his arms look like condoms full of walnuts, I'll argue with anyone but fuck that, I know my limitations...

The other calming things are cartoons and heavy guitar/rock/metal music, I've leant to keep them on my phone in a playlist so I can sit somewhere else and listen/watch them until it passes...

Had a mates Daughter sit next to me once when an ' episode ' kicked in, she was eight, she sat there stroking my hand and told me it'd be alright and to not worry about what others thought, then she said ' Fuck 'em anyway if they've got something to say they can say it to me first ' brought me right out of it I can tell you...

Fuck me sideways, you are actually ME. Apart from the bagpipes. Laughing
The violent thoughts when you're near others always worries me. I have millions of flashes. Like chucking a workmate infront of that bus when we're casually walking to the pub, or when the missus is driving I just envisage grabbing the wheel and steering us both into the path of a lorry. (I sometimes sit on my hands when she's driving now).
The seeing things aren't quite as vivid as yours, I can make out the shapes but it's never in a clear enough path of vision that I could make out "clothing".

If I get worse in the next 8 years I'll definately send you a PM (if you haven't flipped out and stabbed half your town).
