Hi all. Some of you may have noticed the woes I suffered with my last bike (basically bought a bodge job and paid the price). Now I'm in the market for a new 125. (Had a look at Direct Access to get a bigger bike but cannot afford it atm with rent to pay and a missus to keep!).

Anyway I'd really appreciate it if some of you guys would offer advice on various bike I see; hence the snog, marry, avoid baloney. I'm not in any real rush (sorta) to get back on the road so will attempt to take my time and deal with the buses to get me to and from work.

After considering a 'brand new' Chinese bike and spending the next 45mins flogging myself with thorney branches I've decided to consider a few other bikes.

I'll start with this one...

https://www.motorcyclenews.com/ImgGalleryTn/30/296130/77704_260406.jpg
https://www.motorcyclenews.com/MCN/bikereviews/searchresults/Bike-Reviews/Cagiva/Cagiva-Planet-125-1998-2003/

Really has the looks I want; large, sporty and naked.

So, snog, marry or avoid? (And if you know of one for sale let me know!)

Snog. But it isn't large... and will take a little bit of looking after. But it will be quick for a 125, and it does look the nuts.

They're quite rare to find tbh. Prices I've seen are cheaper than the YBR but I guess the Yammy keeps its value better.

Hi

The Cagiva Planet / Raptor is an unfaired Mito. Most will be derestricted hence putting out somewhere around 25hp, giving them a top speed of mid 90s mph.

However it will require occasional top end rebuilds (and more worrying, you don't know when one was last done, hence best to do one when you buy it).

Given how few 125s there can be for sale at times (or at least ones that are not wrecks) then I would be inclined to look at what is for sale and which of those you like rather than picking a specific model and then looking for examples for sale.

All the best

Keith

Hi

Depending on what it really looks like:-

https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/honda-nsr-125-/260752721530?pt=UK_Motorcycles&hash=item3cb612c67a

But budget is important

Also check Autotrader.

All the best

I did consider that one but got put off by its 'boy racer' -ness.

How easy is fitting a starter motor? Suppose it can't be that bad. Will look into insurance.

Hi

No difficult, but depends if it really is the starter motor that has gone (probably but you never know).

All the best

I have a NSR and the starter motor replacement is easy however that sounds like a seized engine to me..............call me cynical Thumbs Up

How about the 125 version of my other bike. Hyosung Comet GT125 or the sportier looking GT 125R. Large, looks good, V- Twin, Good on fuel and cheap to buy. Avoid pre 2006 which had some issues and you'll be fine. Mine has never let me down yet and I use it everyday in any weather.

As it bump starts and runs then it isn't seized now, and being currently seized is pretty much the only way it could stop the starter motor working.

I would be careful with something like that but at that kind of price it is worth a look.

All the best

I totally agree, hence keeping a NSR in the shed for when they are banned.

Bloody EU have spoilt our oil sniffing fun!

What's the resale like on a YBR 125?

Noticed they're doing 2yrs 0% on a new YBR. Something I may consider if the resale is solid on a 2010/2011 version.

Resale on 125's is always good as there is learner demand for them.

Given that you will probably lose around £500 pushing it out of the showroom and the first year then aslong as you keep it in good condition then you shouldn't make to much of a loss when you sell it.

A local dealer has 2010 models for £2100 with 2yrs 0%. Seen em second hand for as much as £1999.

Pretty much only reason why I'm considering a brand new 'un. That being said it's a lot of money!

Hi

Difficult to say as that will depend on the price you pay.

Quick look on Autotrader and new ones seem to vary from about £2800 down to £2300 (preregistered new ones). Quick look on completed listings on Ebay for YBR125s shows the most one seems to have sold for was £1650 (2010 one with 10 miles on the clocks) or £1600 (Jan 2010 with 1550 miles). Seems you will lose at least £700 even doing a tiny mileage.

All the best

Keith

Cheers Keith.

Main reason I considered it is because of the finance. I'd rather not take my dad up on his 'parent loan' (I'm 25 ffs!) and pay it back off my own bat.

I guess you're right and I don't fancy losing £700. Might pop a few ads from ebay on here for people to judge.

Hi

Ride the bike a bit and don't keep it perfect and the depreciation will likely be even higher.

All the best

I guess it seems silly to splash out so much.

Here are a few Ebay links... snog, marry or avoid?

Hi

I can't comment too much on prices as I don't really keep up with what various things are going for. What Rob says above is worth considering (although I do know you are probably feeling a bit "once bitten, twice shy").

With the first one I would be concerned why he hasn't finished fixing it up, and not want to pay so close to the price of a good one for one not immediately usable.

2nd one doesn't look bad if you like a CBF.

3rd one is an import that has been dropped. Might well be OK for the money but do some more checking.

4th one is better condition but higher mileage and more money.

All the best

Keith
