This seems pointless..

if you take a CBT, you can ride a 125 up to 14.6bhp with L plates, not allowing a pillion or motorway riding.

take this test, and you can get rid of your L plates, take a pillion and go on the motorway.

yet you have to take a theory and a practical very similar to the A2 licence, which allows you have a 33bhp bike.

So why would anyone take an A1?

Anyone here taken it? Any input?

I am having lessons for the A1 currently.....

I can only just handle the weight and power of a 125,..so my instructors suggested I do the A1 test..then get experience on the a smaller bike for 2 years...before moving to anything else.

But the A1 does not allow you to use a bigger bike after getting more experience on a smaller bike for two years, you pass the A1 test and all you can do which a CBT doesn't allow is to use motorways and to take L plates off. The test is exactly the same as the A2 test and can be done on exactly the same bikes so I also don't understand why anyone would want to do the A1 test as it offers no benefits over the A2 test. If you do want to just ride a 125 surely you might as well do your A2 test rather than A1 so you have the option open to you in the future. Confused

Hi

There are a few other things. Think you can take pillions, no L plates and use motorways. However the other think is that you can do this test on a smaller bike such as a 100cc one.

All the best

Keith

on the a1 test you can do it on a bike of 79cc or more. the a2 has to be done on a 124cc.
