Couple of days late with this, but i only just heard:

He apparently 'stabbed himself to death during a police raid', i imagine that was shortly after he 'fell down the stairs' several times.

For those of you wondering who Smiley Culture is/was, he's probably best remembered for a couple of 1980's reggae hits:

Disgusting. They should have phoned ahead and given him time to flush the stash and have his brief and the press standing by before they kicked the door in. When will the madness end?

No mention of any drugs found in the article I read. Which would imply they didn't have any justification for the raid.

'Police Officer' (no bother, give me producer) was an anthem for 16ers and bike n00bs in general in the mid-80s. For that reason and the fact that Smiley had an innocent look about him, I'd say the filth fitted him up and then made sure he didn't get to testify in court.
