Getting a nice new VW Transporter delivered on Tuesday. The van its replacing is a VW Crafter, that was a bit of nightmare to park at customers houses some times, due to it being over 6 meters long. Now my new van will be smaller and more car like, i'm going to use it as my main mode of transport.

Anyone else do this?

My brother did, until they put a tracker in it. Now he just steals the diesel out of it. Or he would if he'd listen to me a bit harder. Rolling Eyes

Use a Vito as my main transport at the moment - decent enough replacement for a car (I've actually got crew cab seats for it, but no need to use them yet.)

Much less hassle than the LWB LT35 I was using and not a bad 'drive' generally.

I had a Vito a few years ago, but it was poverty spec, my new van will have electic windows, electric mirrors, air-con, cd player/ ipod input, fuel comp, cruise control, parking sensors, front fogs and the very handy twin side loading doors.

Its taken over 3 months from order to delivery

My vito is poverty spec Sad.
It does have electric windows and alloys, cd player (but the base one, with no aux in) front fogs and side loading doors. Most of those (bar the alloys) are standard on the mk2 Vito I think.
It misses things like internally adjustable mirrors - not even the little 'stalk' things, you have to do it outside; never mind fancy computer stuff, which was on the better spec (but much worse condition) ones I looked at.

I used to use a works LWB LT35 for personal use a fair bit, came in handy for picking up bikes from all over the country for on personal business, was usually enough left in the tank to avoid me putting any diesel in either, saved a fortune. I left just before they fitted trackers, although most of my personal use was authorised, maybe not quite to the scale I actually ended up using it to though. Only every day problem with an LT35 or Crafter IMO is parking in supermarkets, can be a pain finding 2 free bays or a bay at the edge to accomodate it sticking out a mile, vans aren't as comfy on long runs either due to unadjustable seats.

You pay the tax on £3000 for the van and £500 on the fuel if subsidised our free. So that's 20% of £3500=£700 extra tax per year for full personal use and unlimited diesel.

I think it's different for commercial vehicles.

I used to work at a place PDI'ing cars and vans. Getting into a freshly plylined van on a hot day was not pleasant - the stink was enough to strip your nasal hairs Sick

I've used a transit tipper for work and daily family use, supermarkets, dropping the little'un off at nursery, wedding rehearsals etc Laughing, nursery was fun, I couldn't have her seat in the middle as it wouldn't go in second gear so was by the door, my other half had to get in my side. Buggy bungee corded on the back and off you go.

I also used a long wheel base Vauxhall Movano (read renault master shit) The van was good to drive and the mirrors worked well, the cab was massive and the kiddie seat was able to fit in the middle with loads of room, nice and comfy, did loads of long journeys working and with family stuff again but kept breaking down and cost a fugging fortune to fix.

Doable but not the best from a womans point of view. But summers coming up I'd give my right arm to be in the van looking down at all those seatbelts between half naked titties.

I've used work vans and other vehicles (with permission) for personal use in the past.
Unfortunately H&S, and insurance issues more recently put a stop to all that Crying or Very sad

This is mine, does about 38mpg when used as a car - not towing which is main use for it.
There is a minor problem parking in stupidly tight places like some supermarkets. Laughing

38mpg you can't be serious?

Thats better than my 1.6 petrol car.

What is it? (Not up on pickups, because I always assumed I could never afford one).

Looks like an Isuzu Rodeo, can't imagine any pickup truck gets 38mpg in a realistic situation. Maybe if you reset the trip as you get on the motorway and calculate it as you get off but in general use most 2.5 litre pickups average 25mpg.
