A courier i know who had kind of become a friend broke his bike yesterday and has asked me to go change some major parts today (sat) or tomorrow.

Not a problem, 130 mile drive to get to him, couple of hours to do the job and then travel back.

He's asked me as he trusts me to do it and means his bike will be back on the road ready for work on Monday.

The problem I have is that i'm too generous, last week i made a small detour of about 30 miles on the way back from up north to pop in and change left hand switches for him and didn't take any cash for it but today is a 260 mile out of my way thing that'll take a fair chunk out of my weekend which is already going to be cut short by going to france on sunday eve.

Anyway, if i asked him to pick up something for me and take it somewhere he would charge me a set rate per mile.
Now, do i charge him this set rate or somewhere in between this and my actual costs to do it or do you think i should really make a mockery of my own judgement and charge him per mile and a few quid on top.

I'd rather help out a fellow biker than see them get robbed by any garage

Personally I would expect him to cover my costs and a little extra on top. (The extra would be between £20 - £50 depending on how long and how big a job it was).

agreed,
there is doing a favour for someone and then there is doing a job for someone...
Its 260 miles out of your way which is going to rack up fuel costs which i wouldnt expect the party doing the favour to have to pay and as far as free labour goes, i would at least expect him to at least shout you something in return for your time/effort/exertise (as garages do ask for £30+ per hour!...

toughy one really, sadly some people who can be "nice" do somehow expect others to move the world for them for free...

As above said. As its a friend I'd expect them to cover costs. Get recipts for everything and show him on the return. Costs will include the obvious petrol refills and food / drink stops.

charge him the same rate he charges you when you ask him to travel somewhere, in fact its over the weekend so copius amount of coffee and some lunch is also in order, the bike fixing bike is kinda a favour only if you recieve favours in return, unfortunately your bike fixing skills are often in demand Wink

As it was I left it to him to give me what he thought was fair, I gave him a tenner back. both happy.

Now, i'm off to france tonight for someone, collect just off the M25 in surry, 60 miles to portsmouth, ferry 11pm, arrive france 8am, back on ferry hour later and return to uk 6pm tomorrow night.

How much should I wallet rape for that one?

A courier's bike needs constant maintenance. Teach him how to fix it rather than fixing it for him, even if you get paid. If he can't change a switch cluster you're gonna be a very busy man as his bike wears out and sooner or later he's going to want you to make a temporary fix then it's going to be 'your fault' when he gets stranded.
