"Not fit for purpose" comes to mind under the sales of goods act. Which does include "free" stuff, as you're getting it as part of the deal (otherwise it'd be an easy get out for many products). Not sure how this squares off with the inevitable mention in the small print though.

No idea how you'd go about sorting it.

Why have you posted this in General Bike Chat? It is not bike related.
Anyways, I would suggest that you contact the insurance company without delay and that in the meantime you do not use the car on the public highway. I would expect the insurance company to demand some candy from you but you ought to be able to reclaim this from the dealer that sold you the car. The car was sold to you with the inducement of free insurance. Because the salesman was incompetent or just too keen to clock up some extra commission should not mean that you should suffer a financial penalty.
