Looking at the up-coming easter break I noticed that the May Day bank holiday is right afterwards, so I'm tempted to to book holidays to use those to get as long a break as possible with the least penalty of holiday days used.

Does anyone else do this? What other tips are there for getting the most out of work holidays? I get 20 days off, plus bank holidays, and five days must be saved for the crimbo-new year gap.

Folk in my office cottoned on to this as soon as the royal wedding date was set. People like me didnt pay attention until recently and found it was way too late to try and get any time off. About 60% of our few hundred strong office staff are off for most of the second half of April / early May. Sad

Ay I'll be taking advantage of the 11 day run. Sadly this will most likely be spent writing up my MSc dissertation, but at least I can crack out a wank during my breaks, which is often frowned upon in the office I've found....

I couldn't be bothered to take off the 3 days between the two bank holiday weekends, work is going to be so quiet, it'll be a doddle anyway and besides two 4 day weekends straight after another is epic as it is.

I'm thanking Prince William for picking my birthday as a date for their wedding though so I didn't need to use annual leave to take my birthday off like I usually do.

Become self employed, all your holiday woes will be over. As will all your holidays come to think of it.

I,ve booked the whole 20 days off using 10 days worth of hoilday leave, though alot of places have a 2 week hoilday limit so might not allow some employees to have such a strech off.

I suspect you're the last person in Britain to cotton on to this. Me and 'er indoors are going to Hawaii. Most people I know are taking the same period off work.

Sometimes Easter, May Day and Late Spring holidays fall so that by taking a day here and a day there you can enjoy 4-day weeks for a month or two. Rare though. Aside from that and the standard 3-day Xmas to New Year bridge, there are few holiday tricks.

I'd argue that taking the 3 days between Xmas and New Year is a waste anyway - no-one (apart from poor sods in retail) will do more than 4 hours on any of those days

You're probably right. The number of times I have got a call 'You want to work Saturday and Sunday?' and said yes only to realize it's a bank holiday and I just ruined it.

I already work antisocial hours most of the time, but with longer gaps between shifts and pretty good amounts of annual leave.
However, I'm not a big fan of royalty etc, so I actually volunteered to work the wedding period if necessary

But what about all these places that count weekend/holidays as well? I've heard it done many times, and the NHS is famous for it.

Book Wednesday to Wednesday off, use 7 days (not 5) etc.

Always did try and do this if possible.
Only problem with Easter is that as school holidays tend to be around Easter, prices for a lot of 'holiday' stuff can be quite high.
However 8 days off gives you 16 days of Holiday, which isn't a bad ratio for 'normal' years.

Similarly, of course... a single bank holiday means 4 days off can gives you 9 days worth of Holiday too.

Most schools are off before easter this year I think, We've got a week's holiday booked. And a long weekend at home, for just 3 days leave. When I booked mine my boss noticed and booked it too! Laughing
