Why, oh why, is every fcuking barbershop in the land shut on a Sunday! Surely it makes sense for them to open all weekend?!

I need a haircut! Evil or Very Mad

It's not like they don't warn you during the week. They ask if you want anything for the weekend.

Has anyone else noticed the demise of the 'proper' barbers. Barbers should be run and owned by greek men with big, white hair, tongue and groove cladding on the walls and pictures of said greek man with boxers and film stars circa 1950.

The only female in the shop should be a saturday girl who sweeps hair and washes towels. She DOES NOT offer you tea or coffee, she DOES NOT talk about her weekend, she DOES NOT use a mobile phone.

Customers have their favourite barber and will wait until that barber is available, even is this means they have a longer wait. Chit-chat is not forced, nor uncomfortable but genuine.

Magazines should include 'Practical Classics' and 'Razzle'.

All the barbers these days seems to be devoid of history, run by women wearing black and not only completely ignoring you but talking absolute shit to their mates. I felt as welcome as dog shit. Fuck em, I'm growing my hair now. Tell you what, at £7.50 for 12 minutes work, you can fuck off if you think you're getting a tip. I want for my change. Sluts.

My hairdesser (can't call them barbers, it's women who dress in black and charge £7.80 for a no.2 all over) opens on a Sunday.

Cut thy own hair, assuming you have a proper haircut such as short back and sides or a grade all over.

Buy WAHL clippers. Thumbs Up

Ay, when I used to get my hair cut as a young rapscallion, our barbers had a stack of "Rhythm" magazines, and always a calendar with some bird with her tits out hanging in the corner, the faint musk of cigars, the barber was in a jazz band and decored the place accordingly. Unfortunately he then started charging £6 for a zero all over, so it was bye bye Graham the barber who laughs like popeye, and I've been using clippers and a razor ever since.

I've never understood why a lot of shops (including those aimed purely at kids, etc) have the bulk of their opening hours when everyone else is at work (/school).

But then, lets say they changed 'main' opening to Wednesday - Sunday with odd hours on Monday/tuesday.
Now all the people doing deliveries etc need to work those days. The people trying to contact these companies also need to work these days too. All the related service industries for these people now also have to change their working week. Suddenly actually we're back where we started Wink.

The reason they are shut on a Sunday is they are all singing (although it takes 4 shops to form one group). Wink

Perk of having an aunt who is an independent [s]barbette[/s]</del> ... er, [s]hairdresser[/s] ... no... [s]beautician??[/s]... person wot does other peoples hair (and tutor of such at a college)... free trims at my convenience.

But also means I know her main business comes from doing home visits, as she doesn't have a premises and can only support so many people going to her house. Including saturdays and the occasional sunday appointment.

No idea how much she charges (wa-hey) but if you're desperate enough, it's probably worth whatever a simple 10-minute shave & scissor/razor tidy-up runs to. And she can't be the only one doing this otherwise she'd surely be at the head of a nationwide mobile hair cutting empire by now (ain't stupid, nevermind what the stereotypes say). Get thee to the yellow pages.

edit: damn it all what's with the lack of strikethru?

My old barbers used to be a proper(ish) barbers. Big fat guy with a handlebar moustache, tall thin guy with grey hair and the middle aged greaser (think greased lightning). Used to have classic car mags and the like. And because I was a kid I got a free fruit salad sweet at the end Very Happy

Then a hgv ran straight into the fuckin shop and got it closed for a year. And I started doing it myself. Need new clippers as my pair just died and ill be fucked if I'm paying £8 for a number 2 all over again by some poncey twat with gloss black furniture all over the place. Theiving gits.

Rent for a shop is about 18 to 20 k a year, depending on location and area.

8 quid is a lot, but they need to do quite a few to pay the rent, then the bills for waste, electricity, water and wages. Clippers, scissors and hair products cost too.

Everything adds up really.

Anyway, I have cut my own since 2007 and prefer it.

Do it yourself for free. That is a shocking amount to be paying for something you could likely do just as well yourself.

I went from having hair halfway down my back but now I just shave it myself. I'm not really saving anything because my mum is trained as a hairdresser so she could do it, but I like to be independant and I find it's easier to do it myself whenever it suits me.

Life with very short hair is good!
