Many miles a problem ?

hello, am looking to buy a big bike, have seen this zx7r 1998 p3 and intrested in it, looks pretty clean and has couple bits on it - harris rear sets brembo mc.
But the issue im having that is putting me off and me dad warning me off is the mileage, its done 42,000 mile

What does this mean the condition of the engine may be like, no matter how often you change th eoil etc it is going to wear out, nothing last forever.
This amount of mileage is only just run in for a car but what does it mean for a bike ?

I'm not an expert on those bikes, but I doubt the engine is tired, although the rear shock may need replacing with that mileage.

Price seems a bit high though to me. I guess he is thinking he can make back what he paid for the tarty extras, but it doesnt work like that.

He will accept lower offers I reckon. Cos I cant see someone offering the asking price.

I doubt there would be a problem with the engine.

The bike looks to be in really good condition and well cared for from the photo's but the only way you'll be able to tell what it's like is to hear it running.

Most modern bike engines will be good for 100,000 miles if well looked after. If the engine is smooth and quiet then the mileage should not present a problem. Ask the owner for service history etc, even though I do my own servicing I still keep the reciepts in case anyone wants to see them.

See if you can get the owner to put a youtube video etc up. Because of the mileage I would say it's worth less than the asking price but isn't that the case with all private sales! Put an offer in for £995.

A friend of mine bought a ZX7R last year, with more miles on it than the one your looking at, also it was nowhere near as tidy as the one you are looking at.
Year later it is still going strong with no problems.

He did sell it last week for a grand, and again it was not anywhere near the condition the one you are looking at.

Buy it, you wont regret it!

its has new rear shock, its had a strip down/tidy, new tyres new pads rebuilt calipers its not the bike itself im worried about as been told in emails what been done to it and only thing i was worried about is the engine on the mileage side, wheel bearings etc easy enough to replace and cheap, an engine.... abit more pricey.

so the engine should be a strong till 100k ish if been looked after ?
what would make you guys think its worth less than 1500 ? the mileage ? or bits on the bike that may be worn eclu engine. ?

Because you never pay the asking price for a private bike but judging by the prices on Ebay you should go for it

Mileage will not be a problem.

My GSXR 600 has over 45k miles on the clock and its purring like a kittie killing maniac rabbit rapist, but I did spend a lot of time servicing everything Mr Haynes said could move, mostly because I didn't trust the idiot I bought if from. Pleasantly there were no horrors or non consumable parts that were catastrophically worn, the worst thing was dirt and grime getting in things like the throttle assembly and in corroded connector blocks.

Your link doesn't mention the condition of the tyres or chain and sprockets, could be costly jobs, worth asking about.

Play it by ear. The odd couple blow their engines at lowish milages for if neglected but most go on forever. They are very tough and agricultural. It's safe to say that if it's reached 44K it's a good 'un and if the worst happened decent engines change hands for around £200-250 on Redmonkey. Don't be alarmed if the engine sounds a bit rough, they all do. It will be nowhere near as quiet as say a CBR600 or something like that. For £1500 i'd want a very tidy one with good origional panels.

I've had 3 ZX7Rs, and that mileage wouldn't bother me as long as everything felt tight. The CCT does rattle on them a bit (like all Kawasakis) so I wouldn't let that bother you.

However, I'd try to get a bit knocked off that price. 2 or 3 years ago I bought a 2002 P6 with 8k miles on it for £2k. I'd expect that the seller knows that the high-ish mileage will put off a most prospective buyers, but if you view it and it seems in good nick then £1200 would be a good deal.

Seeing as it had a Dynojet kit I'd recommend a test ride and make sure you are happy with the fuelling. Many on Red Monkey reckon Dynojet kits are pants. Factory Pro kits are much better (I had a trackbike with full Ti Akra, Factory Pro kit + TRE and different sprockets, it was awesome, probably quicker than the ZX10R I had).

NIXON - it has 300mile old tyres new d.i.d chain and new sprockets.
like said engine was only thing i was worried about everything else has been replaced or rebuild (calipers)

Would you guys say its not a bad bike for 1500 ? been looking for a big bike for a while and this is catching my eye big time.
