i got an email from petrol prices advertising the cheapest stations so thought i would take a gander. Closest to me for petrol and diesel are about 135.9 for petrol and 140.9 for diesel and morrisons say about 5p cheaper for both but its about 4 miles out the say. so say i put £30 diesel in the car or £17 petrol in the bike.. is it really worth travelling out of my way for a few pennies per litre (maybe saving a quid?). I mean wouldnt i use the few pennies i save to do an extra 8 mile round trip to get it?

Would you?

i wouldn't. you have to factor in the time and effort of it too. I'd take no solace in being stuck in a traffic queue knowing i've saved a whopping 50 pence Confused

thats what i thought.. there just isn't a big enough saving between stations to justify doing it but petrol prices seem to bombard me with emails about savings to be had Laughing

£30 =

21.29L at 140.9 p/l or 22.07L at 135.9 p/l (morrisons -5p)

4 miles out the way = 8 mile round trip.

40mpg (car on urban roads) = 0.2 gallons = 0.91 litres diesel

You are wasting 0.91 L (£1.23 worth) of fuel to travel and get an extra 0.78L (22.07-21.29) of fuel for your £30.

It is cheaper to go to the one closer.

Bike would be even more so.

not really worth it unless you have to go that way for something else, as its costing you money to get there

On my tank, that would maybe work out at about £15 per year, assuming I filled up once a week, which I don't always. IMO, that's a lot of arsing around for a saving.

That being said, if, on route, there was a garage that was cheapest even by a penny, I'd stop there. Now that to me makes perfect sense to save a few coppers.

No.

I can't even be bothered going half a mile further up the road to Sainsburys rather than BP. Laughing

You might save a few pence if you brimmed your tank from empty each time and drove very fuel efficiently to and from the station but it's a lot of messing around for at most a minimal gain (and more likely costing you more money). The bike would never come out cheaper though as consumables are too expensive/short lived and the tank is too small.

Find one on your way home, supermarkets are normally the best (asda and morrisons especially).

I awlays fill up after a run out at the local Supermarkers on the way home and it's one of the pay at the pump types so no having to get off the bike. It's by far the cheapest ie £1.28.9.

I also tend to work out my mpg after each ride.

Went up to Devil's Bridge for the this week, 122 miles , cost me just over £10 in fuel, Didn't think that was bad.

Will be getting the Z MOT'd and taxed soon, so that figure is going to get worse.
