OK - what should it be: 1.4 x 18, 1.6 x 18, it doesn't matter, or something else? I have searched for this, found little info, and those who say about it can't seem to decide.

and no i'm not going to remove the bearing and take it to a bearing specialist Razz

Did they not switch one or both rims over to 17" on the latest bikes?

Cheers dude...

i actually just managed to do what i've not succeeded in all week and didn't think I would until the weekend .... and get a moment whilst sufficiently awake enough to nip in the garage and dig out the haynes book AND have a look at the rear wheel. Mucho hunting and wiping off of gunk and I found the stamp as well.

And it all matches up.

Now, everyone who's selling a wheel as "Honda CG" on fleabay is flogging a 1.4 x 18 rim - both the used ones and the new-builds. Seriously. What the hell. That's like 3/4 the size. There's no way in hell my tyre's going to fit that, and certainly not safely, right? It'd be like trying to fit one of my 185-section car tyres on a wheel intended for 140s. It'd look comical, then blowout.

Or am I missing something fundamental here? I mean, there's enough of them, many allegedly right off the same model, but I can't even see a past variant in Haynes that would have been that size (google's no help), and the tyre doesn't exactly look stretched. In fact it's already slightly pinched at the bead.

Are brake hubs and rear axles fairly standard fitment, or specced such that i could find a suitable full-size replacement ostensibly for another bike? I mean, 1.8, 1.9, 2.0 I could see working. Even 1.6 may be worth a risk, though that's more a front wheel size. But 1.4?

i'm stumped then - it's deffo stamped as the (much!) larger size and by eyeballing it I'd say that's easily 1.85 inches / 4.5cm or so...

starting to get a bit narked off by this, i just want a straight wheel of the right size to ride the bike with again! should it really be this difficult? Rolling Eyes

been like 2 weeks so far... more, including the initial straightening job. ugh.

thats the thing, i double check the size with them, so I don't end up buying a misidentified 16-incher or whatever and it always comes back ... 1.4 x 18. I'd actually have just gone for it if someone else hadn't suggested to me it should be 1.6 but all you can get now are chinese CG-clone pramwheels... then i checked it out properly and...

well, they all came back at that size except the one where i ctrl-c'd the wrong auction number and it was a 1.6 x 17 Thinking ... which isn't right for the 1970s/80s 17-inchers either, according to haynesy-waynesy.

if the tyre will actually fit on it and be safe i'll give it a flutter on the off chance I can at least ride around on it til my current one's fixed (didn't take it off straight away because i was told it may take 2 weeks to get done ... "i can't wait that long" i thought... lol) but it does seem a touch fishy. 25~33% or 0.45 inch size difference isn't exactly a hair's breadth. It's thinner even than the front should be (1.6 x 18).

your saying that does remind me i havent refreshed the actual search in a couple days though, maybe THAT one will have the right size! got an auction number or seller ID I can hit up please?

Heh I reckon there's ebayers reading this forum, a lot more CG wheels are appearing now and a number of them are starting to list the relevant details Very Happy (is it straight? year? size? things you think would be normal stuff to include when selling a wire wheel Laughing )

Follow-up: It's definitely 1.85 x 18. Not sure what it is with the jokers saying a 1.4 width rim is fine for this bike but I hope no-one's got either burnt or hurt by running one that narrow with a 90-90...

Paid through the nose somewhat because I cocked up the timing on some more affordable ones, but got a correct size rim with decent tyre (better than what I already had I think, though it's still a never-heard-of chinese brand) for a shade under £60 including P&P. Arrived in good time, and went straight in when I did the swap, no messing. Looks identical apart from the tread pattern/depth and not oscillating.

Did the valve clearances (VERY cold engine by this point!) and a couple other things, oiled chain, checked alignment and chain tension, rear brake adjustment and tyre pressure and went off for a scoot round the block. Solid, not a jiggle. Liked it so much I didn't get bored (aka "erk the sun's going down") until I was halfway to Telford. 50-ish mile round trip in the end with no problems Smile

Then gave it a damn good clean, though still need to get time to properly polish all the rust off and wax it a quarter inch deep...

My 1980 H100a uses the same wheels as the CG and mine are 1.4 x 18 with 3.0 x 18 tyres or I could use 90/90 x 18 apparently. I'm guessing width just depends on the year made. My tyres do look kinda chunky Smile I needed a new back wheel but chose to restore mine rather than trust any tat on ebay.
