Yeah thats harsh, usually charge that to fit a tyre. Buy a socket set + breaker bar for next time?

Well toll if its a good deal, you would need to know what the dealers hourly rate is.

Most charge per hour and not part of, so £30 sounds like a good dealto get the disk free. Search ebay and you will find bolts for less.

Having just tried to remove the bolts on the rear disc of my Fazer (3 sheared and the other 3 rounded, with a 5mm alen key socket) that it can be very hard to get them off.

On the other hand I was planning to re-use the disc, and hence why I didn't heat the bolts. The mechanic should have heated them before removal which meant they wouldn't have snapped.

£6 a bolt is VERY expensive, and sounds like a rip off to me. Have you checked Bbay and the like to see what they cost on there?

Hope that helps.

(ps posted this in both threads!) lol

You posted in the workshop last week saying you couldn't get the bolts undone, so you took it to a garage and he got them off for £30 which sounds fair enough. Confused

Bolt sound expensive though, but I have no idea how much they normally cost.

What are they Gold plated bolt's. Give me a size and I'll give you an idea how much. But I cab buy 20 6/8 mm bolt's, Depending the length, From about £2.50. That's nut, bolt, and washer's.
No idea if the shop will do postage. But I can get the phone number is any one is interested.
John933

This is something I posted about the same thing, some place else.

I usually get a few nut's and bolt's from a fastener place near me. Any way I was told to try another supplier. And I did. Was surprised at the price, Compared to my old place.
I.E.
High tensile zinc plated 10mm X 55 bolt's nut and washer's (20) £2.30

What I brought in all was. With nut and bolt and washer, was.

(20) 10X55
(20) 8X50
(20) 6x50
(20)10x30
(20)8x30
(20)6x30
(50)4mm washer's
(50)5mm washer's
So I've brought 120 nut bolt's and washer's. Plus 100 washer's. Grand total with VAT £16.86 I think that's good. I'll be down there again to fill in a few blank's. On the understanding that you can't have too many good nut's and bolt's.

Yep sounds fair to me, most manufacturers state you should replace disc bolts anyway.

If you couldn't get them off obviously they needed sound work to take them off, £30 is more than fair. Stop being tight.

So you couldn't do a job yourself that a pro could, and you begrudge paying them? If they just popped a spanner on them and undid them for you, yes it's terrible. Your paying for the expertise and knowledge on how to remove those bolts, not just the physical act.

It's like the boiler repair man that charges £100 to fix a pump - £5 for the hammer and £95 knowing where to hit it.

No its not. If all 8 had to be welded and removed £30 is more than fair. Disc bolts are usually shoulder bolts and a wee bit more expensive. Put it this way I replaced the 10 on the front of my bike and it cost £67.

Disc bolts aren't an off-the-shelf item they usually have an oversized head and a shoulder.

It sounds very fair to me if I'm honest as said YOU had already tried and failed to remove them and if they were into alloy (a guess here ) they could easily have taken a couple of hours to remove without damaging the wheel or disk.
look at the £30 compared to a new wheel if you had snapped the bolts off in it and it now looks good value.
was it a bike place or a normal workshop? most are going to be charging at least £25 per hour I would think and the bolts could easily be that sort of money
Thumbs Up

They are not called allen key bolts. They are known as Allen screws. They do not screw into the disc and then into the hub, they pass through the disc and then screw into the hub.
BTW £30.00 for removing stubborn screws from a delicate area should not be considered a rip off.

It'd have been nice to tell you beforehand, but for the work needed, it sounds fair - especially if you didn't ask them to inform you if it was going to be expensive.
I've paid more than that to have a couple of studs extracted from an engine head I gave them.
I knew it was going to be an annoying job, so didn't baulk at the price.

Price for the bolts sounds about right for the standard OE prices - try ebay etc for cheaper.

I would go further than the others and say they have been kind to you. That isn't expensive, they saved your disks. I think you have found a good spanner shop.

Sounds like a total bargain to me.

I payed £20 to get someone to mill two broken, rusted stumps of mudguard bolt out of the alloy lugs on a set of forks (as supplied by the breakers!) and consider it to have been a bargain.

They must have been well stuck and he's probably undercharged you in comparison to the amount of time and effort the job took.

Those prices are probably for genuine parts but it's entirely possible that they are an odd size and only available from kawasaki.

Yeah like before, pay up.......they sorted the problem you couldnt, unfortunately in life in order to make an omlette you have to break eggs.

It was probably a job they didnt really want to do anyway, too many people moan about stuff like that afterwards, if you did start to get shitty he would probably tell the next person that comes in with the same problem "sorry mate cant help!"

Could have bought a £30 Aldi welder and done the job yourself, and still had the welder Laughing The price for the work involved is reasonable only by comparison to the usual ripoff rates of dealers. I have never needed to weld a disc bolt to free it - so you have to wonder how competent they are. Do they not possess air tools or PlusGas?

£8 a bolt sounds about right - I remember a local Yam dealer wanting about six quid a pop for disc bolts for an XJ600 once. You'll often find they're a difficult to find type - fine thread pitch, low profile heads, that kind of thing. They also need to be a particular tensile strength. Be careful when selected cheaper alternatives that you get something that will do the job properly.

Could very likely have bought a whole wheel with disc much cheaper than putting the part in a dealers etc.

Someone must have used a copious amount of loctite on the bolts. Laughing

When I changed my front discs I had to use an extension bar to get them to free up.

£30 is a good price for the work they had to do.

£30 is very good if all 8 had to be welded, impact wrenched heated up etc etc etc. I paid £40 for a friend of a friend to remove a severely corroded chain adjuster from my swingarm and thought that was a brilliant price.

OEM parts are pisstake expensive, that's not the fault of the garage.
