Can someone explain breakdown cover?

I have had two basic quotes, £40 from the AA and £38 from green flag.

1. Is this the only annual fee?
2.If you break down will they transport your bike home with no extra charges?

I'm going to guess that "basic" means Green Flag's "Rescue" pack, which covers local vehicle recovery. I suggest that you read the T&Cs yourself to find out what that means.

For reference, I have Green Flag Recovery Plus, with any vehicle cover (covers whatever you're in/on, car or bike), local and long distance recovery, collection from home, hire/accommodation if the vehicle can't be repaired on the same day. I think that was about £100 for me and the wife, but prices change regularly.

Yeah, check the T&C's. I cancelled my AA cover and used the free one from my insurance company as it will take me home wherever I break down. AA cover for this was almost double the basic price.

The AA also tried selling me insurance for the repair costs at an AA garage local to where it broke down, till they found out how old the bike is.

There are a lot of categories of breakdown cover. AA does different policies, one that covers you for any vehicle you're in (driver or passenger) and one that covers one vehicle.

There are also various categories on whether they recover you for home start problems, where they tow you to and how much support you get. Do a bit of homework on exactly what your needs are before just buying the basic cover, because you may find it lacking.

But once you're a member, you only pay an annual fee, there's nothing else to pay.

Incidentally, AA have a deal on Quidco (one of the cashback sites) https://www.quidco.com/user/1139289/98501 with a load of cashback. Somehow they're offering £21 cashback on a £28 policy meaning it costs effectively £7! Search for AA on the site to see the deal, finishes today I think.

Cover varies wildly with breakdown policies especially the ones that are free with insurance, I have heard of some literally taking you to the nearest garage, however not to be immeadiatly dismissed if your budget is limited as it will get you off the motorway, which is you break down on the motorway without cover its £100+ just to get off the motorway????

I have onward travel with the AA, I have a puncture in Scotland a month ago, they put me up in a premier Inn (£72.50- it was after 6pm) phoned round for a bike tyre (unsuccesfully) they arranged a hire car which I had for 3 days (no cost, just a fuel deposit) then relayed my bike back to my house 350 miles!!! Bargin I thought at £10 per month

A cousin of mine bought a cheap car off her sister which promptly broke down on the motoway, she didnt have cover and decided to "walk off" the motorway, police eventually got it towed away and impounded £450 after one week!!!!!!

I think I pay in the region of £100 a year to the AA in order to be able to be recovered from anywhere to anywhere. So far I think AA have lost money having me as a customer.
