Whilst I was riding the bike, the nut and bolt holding the postive lead to the battery must have loosened and the terminal disconnected, causing the bike to die of course.

I reconnected the terminal there and then, but it wouldn't start. It would just turn over and won't fire. I have no spark, what could the problem be?

The bike is a 2000 ER-5. Never had any problems until now.

Thanks.

It's not a dirt bike, it won't run without the battery connected. Therefore, it did not discharge.

It has to be a different component.

I'm guessing the + terminal has touched your frame or shorted out, check your fuses.

Often the main fuse is on the starter solenoid. No idea about your own bike though.

I have checked the ignition fuse and the main fuse, both are fine.

Besides, if it was the main fuse it wouldn't even turn over, right?

The battery is dead as a result of the alternator not charging it when your battery was disconnected. Give the battery a charge overnight,.
Borrow your neighbours battery charger.

+1 if the terminal is loose it wont be charging 100%, slowly discharging.
Attach the battery & bump start it!

Update and bump to this thread. Still no spark.

- The fuses are fine (both main and ignition)
- I have changed the CDI
- I have changed the coils
- I have tested the safety stand
- Battery is charged: 12,6V

When the bike was working, with the kill switch on, the bike wouldn't even turn over. At the moment, it turns over but with no spark. So am I right in saying it can't be the spark plug.

Before I open up the LH part of the engine, how can I test with a voltmeter if there is power getting to the coils?

Please help me, I am this close to taking a sledgehammer to it...

you pobably killed the pulse coil that triggers the sparks at the spark plugs. check that.

When removing the battery you're suppose to remove the negative terminal first, then the positive.

Since your positive terminal was disconnected first, it could have caused damage to your battery.

Although it's probably just out of charge because the alternator wasn't able to charge the battery.

If the voltage is really low (under 10 volts) then it's probably not possible to revive it, so you'll end up having to buy a new battery.
