Petrol theft...

Had to fill the car up this morning on the way to work. At the pump infront of me a lad with his hood up was filling up his focus, looking more closely his rear number plate was gaffa taped on, over where it should be.

Finished before him, walked past the front of his car and the front was taped on too...

He had driven off by the time I'd left the shop, of course he could have paid at the pump, but I'd say it was pretty unlikely.

Not massively bothered, I couldn't really give two shits myself, I'm happy in my little bubble!

Anyone else thing this kind of thing will happen more and more with current fuel prices?

He'd be buggered if he got caught, more so than if he just got done nicking the fuel, surely fraud with the different plates? But how would these people get caught?!

I work alot on petrol station forecourts, mainly in the south west. If I am on one for more than one hour I can almost gaurentee 1 drive off.

The record for me anyway was at a shell station in windsor, saw 5 drive offs in the space of 3 hours.

I think its safe to assume that just like uninsured drivers, 99.99% of us that do pay for fuel are also paying a couple of pence per litre extra so that those that decide they want to pay, can continue to do so.

Theres a station in east london that has tyre spikes at the exit which are remotely drawn down by the cashier once you head out after paying, suprising such a system is used with all the health saftey crap.



In russia you have to pay before filling up then when done you collect your change, stops all drive off,s.

Having heard how common this is it dawns on me that we are all paying for this crime so I wouldnt object to pre payment or using a card at the pump.

I recall seeing a dirt bike with a "looking a bit young" lad pull up to a pump and think "Mmmm theres a drive off if ever I've seen one"
yep sure enough!

Was told a story that fuel tanks are getting punctured to nick fuel from under neath, likely to be bigger cars/vans as opposed to bikes thou!

Its usually pay before here. And its programmed into pump how much you get. A mate of mine used to throw a few quid on as he worked in station as it would go over a few quid hes a biker.

I have been asked to pay before filling once when I was in Norfolk. Surprised it is not common practice these days.

im going to get some abuse for this but i do it all the time, not because im to tight or cant afford it. if you fill up and drive off there is no way to prove that you did it intentionally and all that happens is you receive a letter informing you you need to pay up in 28 days. never happend to me as yet and ive done it alooot. rear facing number plates! mosr garages only scan front plate.

Easy way to sort it, like someone else said, just pay before you fill up. I've noticed it is becoming more common.

Or maybe just stop accepting cash and make everyone use a pay-at-pump system which authorises a certain amount before letting the juice flow.

You might think it is a silly idea, but cheques were fazed out quick enough...

I rarely touch cash and I know a lot of other people who are the same.
