I don't know why people continue on with these hongdon chinese crap.

whenever your getting a used bike there's going to be risks and the chances of getting an absolute hunk of shite, but the reviews of chinese bikes have been absolutely poor. I know theres some people who will say they're not all that bad, but still, I'd stick to what i know is safer

My personal opinion is that their quality control is low. So you get a whole load more defective units get through, and when they mess up they make the whole lot look bad.

I'm finding myself thinking (with increasing frequency) that one should ask oneself this question, when considering a Chinese bike: Would I buy an old British bike?

While this may seem relatively unrelated, bear with me.

Questions that people tend to ask themselves when considering buying an old British bike range from:
"Can I afford that much hermetite?"
"Are parts available?"
"Am I mechanically competent enough to own this?"
"Can I afford the constant fettling?"

As you can see, almost every pertinent question regarding purchasing works on both British and Chinese bikes. Obviously, the British bikes will handle far better, and the build quality will be significantly better (i.e. Brunel was taken as a direct inspiration, quite often), plus they only tend to get more valuable.

Unfortunately, in the case of Chinese bikes, one must acknowledge that there are none of the benefits, and all of the drawbacks listed here:
It's not going to be worth shit when you sell it,
It'll eat consumables (and probably a few things that aren't classed as consumable),
You'll spend more time spannering than riding, if you want it to behave itself in the slightest,
And trying to work out which parts go on which bike (thanks to the godawful ebay listings out there) is even more of a lottery than usual.

Once you've gone through this train of thought, and are convinced of the rightness of your actions, then go, go and purchase your valiant Chinese steed. Return to BCF later, with lulz-laden tales of mechanical woe, and electrical nightmares. Bring us your stories of exploding frames, and extremely low-tuned engine grenades.

BCF will love you forever.

I've had a few of these Chinese bikes and have mixed thoughts on them.

Some seem alot better than others.

Currently have a Sukida GY200, which actually I have just put through its first MOT. It passed Surprised. The MOT guy actaully made a comment about it being good value.

It vibrates, rusts (Although has mainly been outside over 3 years), bits break and you never quite get to trusting it fully. I havent put many miles on it granted , only 3000 odd as I tended to cycle alot last year.

Still, parts are very cheap, its simple and easy to bodge/fix. Its usable (Just about) as a cheap commuter/winter hack/bike you dont give a toss about, but I'd never consider any serious off roading or long journeys on it. The brakes are good though Thumbs Up

Mine cost £450 in a crate delivered, so not bothered what happens to it for that kind of money. Generally it does seem to start and go ok for what it is. I wouldnt want one as my only mode of transport though!

"Its a motorcycle Jim but only just!"

Looking at the bikes in Kent motorycles today and I couldn't believe the price of them to be honest!! How can 125's be 3 K plus, madness !!! People actually buy a 125 at that money?

Not even that, just poor quality everything, low quality materials, low quality electronics, poor quality build.

Just a distinct lask of any quality whatsoever. Just so riders can afford a new bike rather than buy second hand. As soon as you get the bike home it's second hand anyway.

I agree. Although you get the odd bit thats seems to made quite well, yet some parts are total rubbish.

They arent built to last thats for sure. I dont think I would buy another, even as a hack.

Mine vibrates more than a Z200 I had in my youth. Cracks number plates, tax disc holders unless very well insulated.

It is was it is. Be interested to see how long mine lasts. I guess I can always have a nice bonfire with it one day Wink

Well most of them are made in Thailand then:

https://www.fasterandfaster.net/2006/08/triumph-opens-second-plant-in-thailand.html

But my point is that you can't judge a bike as being crap as it's an 'import'. regardless of whether it's initially sold in the UK or germany it's still made in Japan, or Thailand...
Chinese bikes aren't shit because they're imports, they're shit because they're shit.

Yeah but for the price you can still buy a 10 year old bulletproof honda and still save yourself money rather than investing it in something thats going be a whiney bitch thats going to make you go shopping for parts every other day.

Yup, agree with point
Just shocked at original comment!
Thought they had turned it into a distribution center or something!
Says "Motorcycle Factory" on the sign on the roundabout!
But, when they first started up back in '90, there was some humour over the 'Made in England' sticker..... with brakes coming from germany, electronics coming from Japan, suspension from italy, etc....

Snowie was actually asking the other day, saying they were the 'only' UK manufacturer......
Was pondering that one, because they 'are' and they aren't.
Wonder how many Current 'British' bike makers we could list between us? Another thread perhaps!
Joe Erlich still in business?

CCM are still going in Bolton aren't they?

And seemingly Métisse are still around.

AJS motorcycles
Broom Development Engineering
CCM
Cheney
Greeves
Megelli
Métisse
Norton
Triumph
Wasp

Is the current list apparently. So that's just Triumph and Norton really. CCM are nice but a bit of a one bike company.
