Pulled into my industrial estate this morning, slowed to walking pace as a van was pulling out in front of me, he stops in the middle of the road for a second or so, then begins reversing...

By the time I looked down at the bars to find the horn button, then back up again, it was time for a leaping sideways roll and to leave the bike to it's inevitable fate.

Luckily the bike rolled quite on it's side after we parted ways and the van scraped along my tires, but still didn't stop until his back wheels were past the back of the bike!

In hindsight I should've revved the tits off it instead of trying to find the damn Aprilia hidden horn button.

Similar sort of thing happened to a bloke on here. He was driving along, behind a van. Van did an emergency stop. So did the biker. Then the white van reversed into the rider.

When it went to insurance, the Van driver tried to say that he did an emergency stop and the biker didn't leave enough space and ploughed into the back of him. Luckily for Mr Biker, he had it all recorded on helmet cam.

Just be wary that the van man might try and lie

To be honest there's no damage so...

A few very slight marks on the fairing and the bar end but I don't think it's worth the trouble.

I stubbed my finger on the tarmac though Embarassed

Did get me thinking though, I wish I had a dash cam for these kind of things, if he had hit me it would've been hard to prove...

Incidentally his reverse lights didn't work, not that it would've made much difference.

When I was on C50, a truck suddenly reversed into me to give way to on coming micra(It was a narrow road). C50 can't beep at idling. Truck rear wheel stepped on C50 and I had to repair one side of rear suspension.

I always think motorcycle horn should be much louder.
Even 1000cc bike has usually quieter horn than micra.
I want dash cam too.

I've looked into a cam, but tis so much hassle.

The ideal setup would be.

Waterproof camera (or camera in waterproof casing) attached somewhere permanently on the bike.

The cam should have coninuous loop recording, whereby it records say, 2 hours of footage, then continues to erase the beginning and re-records over it. So you always have the last 2 hours on record.

Cam would be wired into the ignition so it starts recording as soon as the ignition is turned on.

I would pay good money for a setup like this, but it doesn't seem to be possible.

I even emailed GoPro about this, and i was told that they didn't have a product with continuous record! Sad

My dad had an ex police BMW, crash was the horn on that thing loud! I had much fun riding through the country in it making the sheep shit themselves Laughing

I usually fit a louder exhaust to bikes, not something ear splitting, but enough to make sure my presence can be heard.

Also supplied with the MiniDVR 3 is a cigarette lighter adapter that can be used to either charge the batteries in the recorder or to power it permanently. The system can be put in "CAR MODE" which detects when you have powered up the recorder from your vehicle. At this point it will turn on and start recording automatically.

ive got the dvr2 and its a great cam. will do the continuious overwriting you want too.

i've used mine in the pishing rain, just put a plastic bag over the dvr part (its strapped to my handlebar) and the camera sits via velcro to my indicator

RSV then? Laughing

You need the official Aprilia Thumb Extender, part no. AP9376365 - £1,387 Mr. Green

The old RSV (98-00) left hand switch gear has the buttons in the correct place if you fancy swapping them round.

I have never managed to hit my horn button when i have wanted to. Its in the right place and all, i just never use it so my thumb does not know where to go.

I have however angrily flashed my indicators at some people. Not quite the same effect as a horn though Sad

Lucky escape mate Thumbs Up

Nearly happened to me once, I now give plenty of space to anyone in front of me and I've learned where the horn button is with my eyes closed!

Can't have looked very hard as they are plenty of systems that will do what you want. Embarassed

4Cam
Sports cam

But why spend a couple of hundred quid, when a cheap HD cam, £25 (these now can be powered while recording) a couple of mini sd cards is all you need.
Making a cam weather proof is quite easy, as there are plenty of places on a bike that are out of the worst weather.

They have come down a lot in price recently, to where I'm thinking about camming up. I figure that pretty soon if you don't have camera evidence, then you'll be stuffed trying to get a prosecution or insurance claim in against anyone.

This is exactly my point. My claim for genuine personal injury and bike damage totalled £3000. Because of a lack of evidence (my witness couldn't be bothered to come to court to testify, and i don't blame him) it was a 50-50 split. It was quite obvious that the TP was at fault too, because of the situation.

Thats a £1500 loss because of lack of evidence. It infuriated me. yeah, its £200 for a good cam, but that will pay for itself if you have an accident. Bike claims can easily exceed that amount. This is why I'm seriously considering it. The only issue though, is whether or not this counts as a 'modification' that needs to be declared on insurance (esp if its fitted permanently to the bike). If it is a declarable mod, then does that mean that any accident i have, they can request footage? I'm worried that if i'm doing 35 in a 30 zone and i have a crash, i'll get done for speeding?

If you do manage it, the pathetic "meep" that comes out of a bike's horn still fails to get the point across. I use the throttle as my horn - that makes my feelings known just fine.

I would not declare it. As its something that can easily be removed from the bike.

You have to remember that the footage can be used against, as well as to prove your case.
Which is why I like to have the cam out of sight.

As I have spot/fog lights on my bike. I'm looking at a 2 part system. mounting camera in one of the light bodies and then having the recorder mounted behind the screen, where its easy to remove.

Just spotted This on ebay under £40

If you don't declace then no... But with a bit of thought on placement and protection. You should be able to make sure the unit does not suffer damage.

Found some samples of the ebay one on utube.
night only in 480
daytime in720

Might just waste some more cash Laughing

Hmmm.

So do if i was to present the video in evidence to my insurance company, and they find that i was breaking the law (lets say i missed the sign saying i couldn't be in the bus lane, for instance - but someone still pulled out on me) would the insurance company say "mate, we can't use that, that'll lose us the claim" or will they bugger me for it? (surely they lose money by buggering me too?)

I would always view footage before saying you have anything.

If you submit it as evidence of your claim, that gives them the right/need to forward to the other co. As we all know if they pick up you were doing something you should not, then they could use it to reduce the % of blame. Hopefully your co would make a biased decision on if they should use it.

I got used to using my throttle as a horn for 12months after the horn died, it saved me a few times, especially on roundabouts with people in wrong lanes.

Its much louder, scares people more into looking around, how many times have you just egnored some tosser beeping at you?

Had to fit a horn for my MOT, but id still go for a mitt full of throttle.

Surely that would come under 'accessories' on insurance... Could mean anything if they don't ask you to define what... Luggage, heated grips, camera, vibrating pillion seat.

As long as you have proof of purchase and it is just an accessory, I don't think you have to declare it as long at it's not a performance mod... Unless they ask you to.
