As you can see in my sig, I've slowly worked my way through sporty bikes and ended up with a Moto Guzzi tourer with luggage and a centre stand - please spare me from 'pipe and slippers' jokes... Razz

I don't have enough room to store and properly look after a 'juicy' 600/ 1000 cc beast, so thought I would get a cheap toy which I won't be worried to clean every fortnight.

Seems like there are loads of 400's out there but I know bugger all about them and need some advice.

Of course a 600 would be nice, as would an RS250. However, one is too expensive to be mistreated, and an RS250 needs looking after.

Any suggestions/ cracking finds on biketrader etc?

The CBR and VFRs are good 400s, and are normally pretty reliable.

A lot of the grey imports were restricted to 110mph, but this was done in the CDI and didn't affect power output up to that speed - and can be de-restricted if required.

What do you consider "race focused?"

You can pick up MX bikes pretty cheap if you dont mind an oldie.
You can also pick up Supermoto bikes, but they'll creep above the grand quite easily.

I rebuilt my old CBR600F into a trackbike for not very much cash. sounds like that would be ideal.

cheap to buy, plenty of parts and cheap/old enough not to get you all OCD about polishing it every 5 minutes Wink

i've got a steelie, plenty quick enough, and solid enough to take being thrown down the road. good for some track fun but if you can the alloy frame models are probably your best bet.

Thanks - all very useful.

I've had a look and it seems that all mentioned are well in excess of £1000.

Must admit, I'm confused as to why a 1980s/early 1990s 400 can cost as much as a late 1990s VTR1000 Firestorm.

Think I might rethink my budget and what I'm after...

Supermoto also sounds like a nice alternative. But don't MX and Supermotos require engine rebuilds and loads of maintenance?

gpz 500 would be a good cheap track bike, always a few on ebay under a grand. Or look for a cat c or d 600 and bodge it up for track use.

Hi

ZX6Rs seem to be pretty affordable for a track style 600.

Or for something totally different a Moto Guzzi Le Mans Wink .

All the best

Honda CB-1 has a similar feel to a race rep 400 (as in manic screaming CBR400 engine that needs to be revved, albeit with a bit more midrange) and sporty riding position and handling. You can get them for well under a grand if you can find one. I went from a CBR600FS to a CB-1 and I wouldn't say it feels any less sporty to ride although it's obviously slower and doesn't handle quite so well.

To be honest, 400 race reps are definitely more expensive than their 600 counterparts which is a shame as I really like them. You could probably get something like an FZR600 for well under a grand but CBR600s seem to have gone up in price quite a bit lately.

Have you ever actually ridden one?

I'm 14 stone and ride an RXS100 no bother and I've ridden an unrestricted RS and it was great.

Tbh an RS would be one of my first choices for a "fun" bike.

RS250s don't need a massive amount of work.
However, very costly these days.

A ZX6 or SRAD would be my choice - or up the budget a little and go for a cheap R6.

Slightly tarted SV650 is worth considering for cheap manoeuvrability, if seriously lacking in engine sparkle.

What most matters is it's a boring commuter engine, versus a peppy sports engine Smile.

Unless you have an R6, or any other 600 Wink.
At least the case for me - I find the 400 just a little bit too annoying - it takes a hell of a lot of work to stay past a bit slower litre bike rider, while the 600 evens that up a decent bit.

600 SRADs are dirt cheap. Fat ugly things but still, they go on ebay for £600-800 sometimes Cool

Im not far off and I found an rs great fun. Scream it all day long! Can easily go illegal speeds but not in 2nd gear Laughing

Depends on how much you are really looking for as I think an rs is quite suitable but you can find a 400 for around the same. Or even a bandit? Or is that not racey enough? You can easily pick one of them up for under a grand...

For under 1000 notes?? Rolling Eyes

IMO the nc30 would be a better track bike, my mate has an r6, 2 nc30's and a nc35 for track days he reckons the handling on the nc30/35 is far superior to the r6....

Iv never done a track day, but i do have a nc30 and they really do just put themselves round the bends with very minimal effort Thumbs Up
