Sorn with insurance?

Hi All,

Looking at buying myself another bike and was told by a colleague that recently a new law was introduced which means I now have to ALWAYS have my bike insured even if it is SORN. Is this true?

Any help would be appreciated.

The new (and utterly pointless) law is that the bike must be insured unless SORNed.

I see, I'm guessing the government is going to see an increase in the number of people putting their vehicles on Sorn for short periods of time then...more admin for them.

Yup, if it's SORNed then you don't have to have it insured.

But if you keep it off the road, and it's still taxed, it has to be insured.

So basically, to keep it off the road you have to get a refund on whatever tax is left and then sorn it, rather than letting it run out naturally.

that is exactly it IMO more people will be cashing in there tax for short periods, then having to re tax paying full whack.

idiots - The bike I'm buying has 12 months worth of tax. So I assume this means I will need to insure myself on it as soon as I get it (as soon as its put in my name) or sorn it and reclaim the remaining 11 months tax.

And insure and tax it again later on in the year say.

How easy is it to reclaim tax once SORN?

Surely it would work out cheaper to not SORN or insure it and just keep it taxed (but off the road) instead?

Hi

That will get you a fine (or probably an offer from the DVLA to accept a bribe rather than taking you to court).

If it isn't insured then that is an offense whether it is on or off the road. The only allowance is if it is off the road AND SORNed.

like I said the government has just made a hell of a lot more work for themselves. I think they say if you dont have insurance they will either fine you or take your vehicle and crush it...and yes I imagine its giving insurance companies a lot more business too.
